Scratch mittens

Hi,

My baby is 9 weeks and people keep commenting about him still being in scratch mittens. I keep cutting his nails and have even tried filing them but he keeps drawing blood on his face.  When and how were you able to give up scratch mittens?

Never used them. I use a soft nail file on my DD nails and we don't seem to have a problem as the edges get filed rounded.

I stopped using them around 3 weeks. He scratched his face really badly when he was first born (one of the nurses at the hospital said covering his hands would disorient him - so we didn't use them at first). He still scratches his face every now and then but I try to trim his nails every few days.

I've never used mittens bc I read that newborns use them to, using the pp's word, orient themselves. I would try removing then and see how it goes. Easy for me since DD never scratches herself, she is 2weeks old, though her nails are a touch long. I'm just not ready to do anything to them yet.

DS couldn't/wouldn't keep them on her hands, so I bought onesies with the mittens built into the sleeves.  She's like Edwina Scissorhands even after her nails are trimmed, so I feel your pain!

Our ped said babies don't really "need" and use their hands until around 3mo, so we stopped using the gloves a couple of weeks before she hit 3mo.  During her awake time I would take the gloves off briefly and touch/play with her hands.  They start to get more coordinated at that point and she hardly scratched herself at all after that.

We used them at first but they wouldn't stay on DS's hands. We finally bought onesies with built in mittens which worked a lot better. He is 3 months and still scratches his face occassionally when sucking on his fingers and we try to keep his nails trimmed every few days to prevent scratches. It has worked so far!

I don't use scratch mittens anymore, unless I see that he has scratched himself, but I do fold his sleeves over his hands when he wears those long sleeved onesies. His nails grow freakishly fast. I still haven't clipped them, but I have filed them a few times, and my baby is almost 6 weeks old.
