big baby...

I had my 36 week ultrasound and appt today. They said that baby is head down and ready to go. Hopefully she stays that way! They are measuring her at 6 lbs 11 oz! I know that these measurments can be off 1 lb either way, but I am still freaking out. If she gains 1/2 lb each week like they say and I go on time (not likely) then she will be about 9 lbs! DH and I were both 9 lbs when we were born so I wasn't expecting a small baby, but now that they tell me a size its more real...I am terrified of a C-section or tearing bad....I really hope this baby comes a little bit early! Dr also says that I am maybe 1 cm dialated. So, that doesn't sound too promising...hopefully I will make some progress next week! Thanks for letting me vent a little bit....

My baby girl was measuring 6lbs 12oz at 35 weeks...yea, I feel ya on that one. I have a growth u/s tomorrow to see how big she has gotten, but I know not to put too much into it because late term u/s are known to be off by as much as 2 lbs! My friends doctor induced her at 39 weeks for a 10lb baby and her baby was only 8lbs when she was born! That is a big difference!

They estimated my DS #1 at 9 lbs 4 oz on Thursday, and on that Saturday he was born at 7 lbs 12 oz...I don't take ultrasounds seriously after that! They can be very off ;)

Do not freak out. They can actually be +/- 2lbs, which is a lot. They tried to tell me DS was 12+lbs, forced me into a c-section, he was 9lb15oz (still big, but DD was 8lbs 14oz healthy vaginal birth).

Try to get more than one growth U/S, especially if they want to do a section. I had three, and DD's actual weight ended up being spot on to what they predicted.

We did an ultrasound at 36 weeks to check position and they were estimating her to be over 8lbs already. Late term ultrasounds are notoriously off, sometimes up to 2lbs! My DS was 8lbs6oz on his due date so I'm really not concerned and you shouldn't be either.

And don't forget, fat squishes way easier than bone does!

DS 8/10/2010 8lbs. 6oz. and 21.5in long! DD 11/28/2012 8lbs. 7oz. and 20in long!

Thanks everyone...I feel a little better today after reading your responses. I am still a little nervous and probably will be until LO comes. Since I am a FTM I have no idea what to expect anyway so that doesn't make it any easier. I don't think that I will get another ultrasound though. Dr said that 36 was the last one...but maybe they will do another...

As others have said don't put much thought into their guesstimate because they can be very off.  Also, even if baby is 9lbs that doesn't mean your body isn't completely capable of safely delivering baby vaginally.  Your body knows what it's doing and will grow the baby that is right for you.  Plenty of women deliver 10+lb babies vaginally with little to no tearing.  Just keep thinking positive thoughts and don't let your doctor scare you into thinking your body doesn't know what it's doing!
