Terrified of giving birth!

I am absolutely terrified of giving birth. I don't have a very high pain tolerance. I honestly think this is hindering me really trying to get pregnant. Is anyone else afraid of giving birth? I think knowing I'm not alone in this fear would really help me.

I think you need to get a grip. If you are this afraid when you're not even pregnant, then you are not ready to TTC. Some anxiety is normal, but yours seems to be extreme.

I wouldn't say I'm terrified, that seems a little extreme, more like I don't want to be in pain because I have a low pain tolerance and I'm kind of a big baby when I'm in pain LOL.  I'm not really scared or terrified, just not looking forward to being in pain which is why I want to have an epidural.

It's normal. Absolutely normal. I was scared until I was actually in labor. Then it wasn't as frightening. I had a goal to focus on. My delivery was quick, unmedicated and uncomplicated though. What helped me was my midwife and husband saying reassuring things.

You are most definitely not alone.

I think most people are afraid of giving birth to varying degrees.

I know for me the best thing was to really educate myself and learn that my body is MADE to do it.  It also helped me to think about my options and what I would be most comfortable with (hospital, birthing center, home birth, drugs or no, etc.).

Talk to you doctor, read books, watch documentaries...it might not be as scary as some have made it out to be. =)

Good luck.

It is common to be uncomfortable with the unknown. You'd be suprised how much you can handle when you need to.

P.S. It was more exhausting than painful for me. Meds are awesome.

Giving birth is nothing. It doesn't get really scary until you get home from the hospital and realize there's no longer nurses at your beck and call.

I had an epidural both times and I seriously had the easiest labors.  They were crazy easy.  I had no pain and I barely pushed at all either time.  I was so completely freaked out at the thought of an epidural and even that was a big nothing.  Try not to stress.  GL!

It's normal to be scared. Even terrified. It's not right to say your not ready to TTC if your terrified. I was induced with Pitocin due to gestational diabeties. I got the epidural after my water broke 4 hours into labor. I labored 9 more hours with little pain. It was mostly pressure in my rear end not at all what I was expecting at the time.
Don't beleive all the myths. Your labor when it's your time may be amazing. Don't let that stop you from TTC if you want to be a mommy. Once that baby comes out your entire outlook on life changes. The good old saying "you don't know love like a mothers love" is so true!
Also you won't be in labor for the rest of your life. It is a few short hours until you get the most amazing gift of your life!
GL to you!

thevfirst time around, I wasn't afraid of giving birth, because I didn't know hat to expect.  The second time, I knew what to expect and I had a lot of anxiety towards it.

For the first-- I was nervous a few weeks before I gave birth to LO. He was almost two weeks over his due date- so I was one happy mama to be in labor. I also had horrible, "peaking", drug free contractions for 16 hours before I caved and got the epidural since I was only 1.5 cm dialted. Then they had to do a c/s anyways since my water broke. But I was never scared. I was actually surprised at how calm I was. I think it may be because you know the pain leads to a baby.... a couple months after LO after a few small attacks I had a massive gallbladder attack and had to have surgery to get the quarter sized stone out. That scared me shi*less because I had no idea what was going on.

I will agree with the second statement. The worst part of birth for me was getting the epidural. I got stuck in the spine 4 times and was screaming bloody murder while they twisted that sucker in there. It's not something that will factor into whether or not I decide to TTC because all that pain is well worth it.... but you can bet in my last month of pregnancy I will likely be nervous and likely very scared when they stick that needle in there (or if my body permits, I may go drugless)

Its normal to be afraid. Its a whole different degree of pain. But honestly? It's manageable. I was scared up until the moment I heard DD start crying. If you weren't scared I would think you were crazy. ;)

Giving birth isn't like the pain you've previously experience with other things. It's totally different.

I'm a big wuss when it comes to pain but I managed natural child birth just fine. Sure it was crazy painful but it wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be. And, it is a gradual thing. It's not like then you stub your toe and it hurts suddenly. And with contractions you get breaks in between. It's like a few seconds of peace every so often. That really helps. I actually fell asleep in between several of my contractions.

Read Ina May's Guide to Childbirth. A good section of the book has birth stories. And also explains what happens during labor. For me, learning about the details of it and reading positive stories about the way our bodies were meant for birth helped ease my fears.

Because telling you that you need to get a grip when you indeed do need to get a grip is not rude.

Telling you that you are fuvcking spazzing out about nothing and need to get the hell over yourself and shiit a kid would be rude.

Seriously though, you'll survive. Or not. Those are really your only options.

You are lucky they eventually got the epidural in - for me, they tried and tried and couldn't get it in at all...I have scoliosis which prevented it. I later learned from DH they tried for an hour (I was super out of it and had no sense of time, lol). Had to settle for drugs in my IV.

OP - agree with all the other posters...the anticipation of the pain is the scariest part (and this is coming from someone who does not deal with pain well at all), but the end result is 100% worth it. Does the pain suck? Yes, but your body just kind of takes over and you just make it through however you can.

You have to understand that every birth is different for each woman. And if you're scared of the horror stories then kindly tell the person that you don't want to hear it. Just because she had a bad experience, it doesn't mean you will.
