Kombucha Tea during pregnancy?

Hi ladies,

I've been drinking Kombucha tea (one a day- just the store brand that is on the shelves next to Snapple, etc) and haven't given it a second thought, but recently ran across an article talking about how pregnant women shouldn't drink Kombucha (though I think they are referring to the more "hard core" detox, homemade type Kombucha. So I did a bit more googling and am even more thoroughly confused. It's about 50/50... some sites say stay away, some say it has pregnancy benefits.

Any insight? I drink it as an alternative to juice/milk because it's low sugar, minimal caffeine, and I can't take vitamins, iron, etc, with just water... Thanks all!

Well.. I'm not a 100% follower of all of the pregnancy don'ts. But Kombucha is fermented so there's alcohol in it. I'd say once or twice a week would be better than daily, but that's just my unprofessional thought. You might need to look up the brand you are drinking and find out exactly how much alcohol is in it and then ask your MD about it. Otherwise, they probably will have no idea what you're talking about.

BTW I love Kombucha! I haven't had any since expecting for the reasons above, but also because I'm one of the lucky ones that still throws up every day.

So now I just feel really naive, but to my knowledge, with the general grocery store brands, the alcohol is negligible (ie, less than the amount of alcohol you'd ingest by eating frosted Christmas cookies due to the alcohol in the flavored extracts). I mean, you don't need an ID to buy it... Now I feel kind of dumb. Oi. Too many do's and don'ts!

I wouldn't worry about drinking it now since you've been drinking it all along.  I would be wary of starting to drink it mid-pregnancy because of the detox effects.  Even then I don't know that it would really be a bad thing, but I would at least do it with a lot of caution.  Since your body is already used to it I wouldn't worry about it.  The benefits are definitely good for both you and baby.

I'm with a PP - it's not something I'd START drinking during pregnancy, but if you've had it up til now, I don't think it'd be a problem.  I wouldn't switch brands, though.
