Tummy Time...when to introduce

I have been reading a lot lately and my LO is three weeks old.  All the information is talking about tummy time now.  I asked the doctor and he said I could try it but it wasn't necessary.  I am curious to know when and how others introduced tummy time>

We started doing it as soon as his umbilical cord stump fell off. Just for a few minutes at first, but he really loved it so every week we'd do it just a little longer.

We started as soon as her cord stump fell off and her belly button was all healed up which took a few days after the stump fell off.  I would say it was around 3 weeks when we actually started.

do you just put LO on a blanket on the floor on their tummy and sit with them?  I don't have a clue what to do.  Also will this help with the gas?

We have a giant ottoman so we would put his blanket on there and set him on it. I'd sit at his level so when he lifted his head up he'd see me. No that he's bigger and moving around a lot more he's on the floor. And in his case it did help with gas, sometimes if he wouldn't burp after a bottle I'd lay him down for tummy time and he'd burp almost immediately.

My LO doesn't like tummy time, but he enjoys laying on his stomach when he's laying on me or my DH and because of his reflux we have to hold him upright for 30 min after eating and we hold him in that position as we walk around with him which he does like and he's getting really good at holding his neck up like that so you could try those positions if putting your LO on the floor doesn't work.

We do tummy time since he lost the ambilical cord, I noticed it helps with gas, sometimes it's on the playmat, sometimes just on my knees.

We do this as well for the same reasons. With my first, this is also what we did as she HATED tummy time but was happy sitting up. Go figure. She did just fine an was taking her first steps at nine months. So don't feel bad if you need to be creative with your LO and find a position/activity that gives them the opportunity to use their necks and upper body that isn't exactly what the books describe.

I probably started at 3 or 4 weeks.  I think if you wait a bit, it's not a huge deal.

I've found that the LO often does better when I have him propped on the Boppy - otherwise, he's kind of face-planted into the blanket/floor.

you shouldnt do it for a long time. i would say do it for even less than a minute, because even though they hold up their head, it still hurts their neck and they dont know what to do. you really shouldnt do it until they can completely hold their head up on their own.

This is not accurate. The point of tummy time is to help strengthen their neck and trunk muscles, since babies are now back sleepers instead of tummy sleepers. They need to develop those muscles so they can learn how to roll over, sit and crawl. My pedi suggested as long of a period of time as your  LO will tolerate - anywhere from a minute to 15 minutes. I usually flip my little guy back onto his back when he starts to fuss or cry, and try again for another couple minutes once he settles down.

My LO is 2 weeks, and we've been doing a sort of tummy time on our chests since coming home from the hospital. My pedi recommended it, and she now wants us to start regular tummy time. She suggested 2-3 minutes to start, or as long as baby will cooperate,
