Horseback Riding During 1T

Any other 1T horseback riders out there? Anyone else experience some cramping post ride? Have issues sitting the trot? Trouble catching your breath?

I had my second (or third, I forget) ride since I found out I was pregnant yesterday. I did end up telling my trainer, just for safety's sake. My horse is a good boy and I'm no more at risk from falling from him then I am doing anything else. So, I'm really not at all worried from that point of view.

However, I ended up with some decent cramps last night post ride and while they weren't bad enough to warrant pain meds, they were pretty uncomfortable. I also had lots of issues watching my breath. It's ridiculous. I'm not sure though if that has to do with pregnancy or with my bi-cuspid aortic valve + pregnancy ...

So, any other horseback riders out there? Are you cutting back at all on your riding? Stopping all together? Not changing a thing?

I'm a rider and though I do it more for working on our cattle and on the farm than I do for leisure, in the first tri, I've always taken a break. I've always had horses, but too much bumping and bouncing isn't good from what I hear, just like falling down can cause a m.c. it's ultimately a big bump/bounce and it's not good. I would keep it to walking, no trotting since it's the roughest means of riding and if you must, make sure you keep your ass off the saddle so you can keep your midsection floating on a smooth path.

I ride horses a lot mainly on the farm working our cattle but I take My boy to the arena to have some non work related fun too. I talked to my Dr. about this and she told me to refrain from riding my horse or doing any other strenuous activity that included lots of bumping and bouncing while I am preg. I would be very careful if you are experiencing some cramping post ride! I agree also about keeping it to a walk!

My boobs are too sore to handle the bouncing right now anyways too. But my boy is sweet and we still spend lots of time together!

I haven't ridden in a few years now, but I'd stop or keep it to a walk if you're having that kind of cramping.  Check with your doctor as well.

I used to ride but, sold my last horse about 5 years ago when I started TTC but, would occasionaly ride my sister's horse. Well, now 5 years later I FINALLY got my 1st BFP! Anyway the girl that actually bought my horse was pregnant when she came out & rode & bought him and I know lots of trainers ride & show still but...that being said as loooong as it took me to get my BFP there is no way I would be chancing it and I certainly don't think DH would let me either! Plus, I know you say you trust your horse and I would say the same thing about MOST of mine but still I just don't think you can ever say with 100% certainty that nothing will happen and you won't fall off. I'm not sure what kind of horses you ride or how tall they are but, I've had some pretty big HUS horses and it's not a short fall! At the end of the day they are animals and can spook (snow falling off the roof, thunder, a cat walking into the arena- you can't control it 100% all the time.

Good Luck!!

I think most doctors recommend no horseback riding throughout pregnancy.  What does yours say?

It seems a pretty big risk to take, regardless of how "good" your horse is. Accidents do happen.

I used to ride, not so much anymore. It's expensive to do here in the city. If I had a horse and was obligated to ride him/her for exercise I would keep it to walking.

I wouldn't ride at all. Seems like it can be dangerous for the baby if there was an accident!

My 1st pregnancy I rode a little but it was soo hot that it wasn't comfortable and the heat made me nauseous. I rode my mare until I was about 6 weeks during this pregnancy. My Dr said I could ride, since i had been riding up to that point until it was uncomfortable but once I reached that point I should stop so I did. Just listen to your Dr and your body.

Thanks everyone for your responses. I suppose I should talk to the doctor ... I just don't want to stop now, not when I'm barely 6 weeks along. And my doctor tends to be a bit overly cautious. The nurse was aghasted (is that the right word) that I would clean out the litter boxes. Sorry, but if I don't do them, they won't be getting done. And I ALWAYS wash my hands thoroughly after cleaning up. [Plus, it was my understanding after working 5 year in the vet field that indoor cats were a lot less likely to contract toxoplasmosis. Heck, the vets I worked with hadn't see it in YEARS!]

Walking under saddle is definitely doable but boring. And having a horse who lacks the "go" button, it involves a lot more work on my part to keep him active and moving forward. I'll just miss all our fun trot work - seeing as we finally were getting places, after 12 years.

 Anyways, thanks ladies.

I have decided to be safe in the first tri and not ride. My main horse is only a 3yo and while he is sweet, and quite broke, there is still the 'what if'. I will probably ride my old gelding (18yo) in the round pen, if I am just dying to get out there! However, I have just been going out everyday and lovin' on them, and it seems to have satisfied my need for horsey-ness, thus far. I am not sure I can handle 9mos w/o riding, but I figured I will try! :)

I do know many mamas that have ridden during their pregnancy and everything turned out fine! So, I would just decide how comfortable you feel about the situation and go with it!

I was an active rider before I had DD, and when I got pregnant with her, I continued to ride throughout first trimester, I just stopped jumping as soon as I found out. I did stop altogether once I got into second tri though because it got uncomfortable, and was too hot out. My doctor said anything you had been doing before you should be able to keep doing. I never experienced the cramping post riding like you experienced though, so maybe you should to cut back a little on the intensity of your rides, and as always discuss with your doctor. I like you felt like my horse was very quiet and sane and felt comfortable keeping up with it until I couldn't anymore, I sure as hell wasn't getting on any strange horses I didn't know though.

This time around my horse has turned into a pasture ornament, his only job will be pony rides for DD's birthday.

I just entered my second tri, but I've been riding throughout the first tri.  I stopped training my friend's OTTB, but still ride my mare regularly.  The key is to not take risks (young horses, jumping, eventing, etc...) and keep it to where you are physically comfortable.  If you can ride and feel fine, go for it.  If you are cramping, listen to your body and just groom for a while.

My doctor told me to stop riding during my second pregnancy because it's "too bouncy".  I told her, "If you're bouncing, you're doing something wrong."  Lol.  She didn't get it, but some of the dressage ladies I know thought that was hilarious.

FTR, my mother rode until the day before my sister was born and my former coach rode all the way up until 38 weeks with all three of her kids.

I just sold my HUS horse, thankfully the week after I found out we were expecting! I feel so grateful he went to a good home, because for the past 10 weeks I cannot imagine riding.  I've hardly been able to walk around the block.  Hopefully one day I'll be a horseshow mom!

Kissimi21:

This is true!

Unfortunately most doctors don't actually understand what skilled riding actually entails. They assume people are just flopping around in the saddle for an hour.

Obviously listen to your body and ask your doctor's opinion if it makes you feel more comfortable, but many women continue to ride until they get too uncomfortable to do so.

The big concern is falls and unruly horses.
