D@mn you, metformin

I feel pretty confident in saying that this is the worst IF drug I've taken. Mentally, I suppose Clomid messed with my head the worst (I did use to call myself The Incredible Hulk), but this is physically uncomfortable to a degree no other medication has been. I really don't want to gross anyone out, but let's just say that I have pretty much have every gastrointestinal symptom you can think of and I'm getting stomach cramps, too. I was definitely warned that this was a possibility so I can't say I'm shocked, but it feels like the Battle of the Bulge is being waged in my GI tract right about now.

I spend more time in the bathroom than Lindsay Loh.an.

The nurse told me to call and ask to be taken off the meds if it became "unbearable," the definition of which I'm debating right now.

TTC #1 for about 3.5 years
ME: 37, PCO, immune issues?, teflon uterus (my added diagnosis)
HIM: 38, Perfect. (Showoff.)
Month before starting Clomid, spontaneous pregnancy. m/c at 7 weeks and D&C.
Four months of Clomid, one IUI, with Intralipid each cycle: BFNs all
IVF 1.0 July 2012 -- Lupron, bravelle, menopur, estrogen, progesterone supps, intralipid. 14 ER, 14 fertilized, 1 blast transferred, 2 on ice. BFN
FET 1.1 -- 10/2, transferred our 2 blasts. Lupron, PIO, estrogen, baby aspirin, prednisone. BFN.
IVF 2.0 December 2012 -- Bravelle, Menopur, Ganirelix, Prednisone, Metformin, estrogen, progesterone supps. 22 eggs retrieved on 12/14, 17 mature, 15 fertilized. OHSS anticipated so ET cancelled. 3 embryos frozen.
Broke up with old RE. Moving on to new dude. Maybe the change of scenery will be just the trick for our frosties. On BCPs for possible April FET.

Are you on the ER (extended release) white tabs? I'm on Met for fasting IR and have fortunately experienced no side effects.  I heard that people who are prescribed the non-ER type have all the symptoms you are describing--sounds awful and I hope you get some relief soon.

Did you start out at 3 times a day right off the bat or did you work your way up to that.  I know normally they want to start with a small dosage and then slowly increase it as your body tolerates.  Or maybe what other's suggested, change the drug to ER or the similar.  I hope you're feeling better soon.

The first day or two of each step in the process was pretty bad. The first time I took a pill, I had a really hard time for a day or so. And the same with the first time I was on two pills a day. I just recently increased to three a day so I'm thinking it might improve as my system gets used to the increased dose. If not, then I'll consider whether to go off them entirely. I think I'll give it another day or two before deciding.

The pharmacist said to take one with each meal, which is what I've been doing.

Thanks for all the help, everyone. At least I have some questions now that I can ask the clinic about switching things up if this continues.

I had the sh!ts for about 6 weeks on Metformin and lost 18lbs then it leveled off. I used to suck at taking them and then switched to extended release and take all 3 pills at night. Having so much rrhea is a good sign it's working. Switch to extended release (they are a $4 generic at Target Pharmacy) and it will get better I promise.

The constant diarrhea will go away. Having horrendous gas and diarrhea that reeks like burning tires is totally normal on this drug. You'll soon learn what food will have you chained to the toilet and what won't.

Oh, FANTASTIC! I was hoping that wasn't just a temporary side effect.

I'm sorry Scoopsy!

And not enjoying the idea of this kind of horrendous side effect/effect. My doc mentioned metformin just this morning to me. AHHHH!

I hope you can bear through it or go back to twice a day or do the extended tabs.

Big hugs and a roll of TP.

I hope you don't get the same side effects I've had. I think Mr. Scoop is trying to decide whether to try to sneak out of our house in the middle of the night and never return. The good news is, he probably won't have time to take anything with him so I'll get to keep all our DVDs.

I got some major poopsies when I took metformin but found dairy to be the big aggravator. Like one tiny bite and 5 minutes later...ug. It did resolve but took a couple months then no side effects...try to avoid all dairy and see if it helps maybe. I know how you feel :(
