Your stomach tightening is most likely braxton hicks contractions. As for the back pain, it can just be from being on your feet too long. To help, try to drink lots of water and rest when possible.

I'd guess contractions.  The stomach tightening is main indicator for me.  Are they happening regularly?

ETA:  If there's anyway you can sit down for a few minutes OR walk around if you have been sitting,  that might make it go away.  They can also be caused by dehydration or a full bladder.

Try timing them.  The more information you have at your appointment, the better.

I would NOT have known what a contraction was if I hadn't had one while the midwife was examining me last time.  I've been having them as often as every 20 minutes for a few hours at a time, with no more than a few hours between each for about a week now.  That's not frequently enough to indicate anything, though.

I'm with you OP. I'm at work and someone touched my stomach and said it was really hard. My back doesn't hurt until later in the day though.

My guess is contractions. I've been having them for weeks. Mine are between 2-3 minutes and have been regular for about for about three weeks. The nurse said it's completely normal, as long as they aren't painful and I'm not leaking any fluid or bleeding. Some women contract for weeks before labor. I've been doing daily NST monitoring and it's interesting to see them creeping closer together. One of these days I'm convinced it'll launch into the real thing... ;)

Sounds exactly like my Braxton Hicks -- tight belly, breathlessness, backache. No biggie.

I guess I'm the only one who doesn't think they're contractions. You said LO was moving around, so it sounds like it's possibly just them in different places. I know that if LO shifts, where he is gets rock-hard and *almost*feels like a BH.

Ask your OB to be sure, though. Could be BH.

Welcome to my life :).  I have tight stomach all day almost every day, worse when I "exercise" (which these days is mild walking) or am just up and about too much.  My OB attributes it to BH contractions, the fact that I had a pretty tight abdomen prior to getting pregnant, and irritable uterus (because I basically have BH contractions that don't really go away for much of the day).  She's not concerned, particularly, because my cervix is tight and closed.

Obviously, get the opinion of your doctor, but it sounds similar to my experience.

Did you end up talking to your doctor about it? That sounds like BH to me. That's how mine feel. My stomach gets tight all over. They normally last 30 seconds to over a minute. And I've had multiple in an hour. They can be accompanied by cramps or back pain. Sometimes they take my breath away. Hopefully your doctor was able to give you some insight. Your doctor can test for real contractions.
