is this okay?

I found out on Monday that I am expecting a baby girl. My cousin who also has an 11 month old daughter gave me a lot (three bags full) of her daughter's newborn, 0-3, 3-6 month clothes.

I was wondering if it is in poor taste to ask the hostess of my baby shower to suggest to guest that if clothes is to be gifted let it be 6 months or older?

 TIA.

IMO the only polite way would be word of mouth, (i.e. if someone were to call or email to RSVP and ask what you wanted, your hostess could let them know). Anything put on the invitation regarding gifts (other than your registry information) would be in poor taste.

I agree with this.  If you do end up with a lot of smaller-sized clothes, a lot of stores will let you do an even exchange for another size, even without the receipt, so you could just exchange for a bigger size.

You could also *just* register for larger sizes.

Not to be MOTO - but likely as your friend's child grow - so will the hand-me-downs. So, you probably really don't need *any* clothes.

So don't register for any.

You will probably still get some.

You can't dictate the gifts you get.

I agree with the PP that you can exchange them.

I got 5 large boxes of hand-me-down clothes from my SIL's mother (from a family she nannied for). My mother knew this. And still bought out nearly the entire baby department of both Kohl's and Target.

People love to give baby clothes. Accept whatever others choose to give you, it's rude to dictate gifts. Exchange what you can, donate or sell the rest.

Thanks ladies. I won't be saying anything to my hostess. Whatever I get I'll try to exchange for bigger sizes, if not, I'm sure I can pass them down. :)

You also never know what you are going to need and how long your child will be in a size for. My 13 month old still fits into some 36 month clothing. Are the clothes she gave you season appropriate for your baby? A 36 month snowsuit is going to do you no good of your baby is 5 months old in July. Also, it is nice to have a few new things.

I agree with PPs. My sis and sil both gave us enough clothes for two years. My nieces b days are within two weeks of our DD so the seasons and sizes will most likely be appropriate. We re relying on word of mouth with family, my mom has been casually bringing it up. My sis Posted on my fb " I have all of kk old clothes if you want it." I replied yes so some people may see that, but that wasn't the intention o the post. And if people ask me abou what I need or don't need I may toss in, we have been really blessed with lots of gently used items from my nieces, I'm not sure where we are going to put all o the clothes. But I only mention it when appropriate to the conversation. People will still buy us clothes an we will most likely return a lot of it.

I got some clothes at my showers, but not as much as you would expect. Most of the clothes I ended up buying myself. What I did get at showers were mostly 6 month sizes and up. I'm having twin girls so I did get a few newborn matching outfits. Some people just can't resist.

I had however, posted a picture of the girls' closet, along with other nursery pictures, to my Facebook album so people may have seen the over-abundance of clothes already hanging there. And the boxes of diapers stacked in the corner - which might explain why I only got diapers in sizes 1 and 2.

Yep. If someone asks your host she can pass your wishes on. You can always exchange what doesn't work for you.

I my self see nothing wrong with saying on your registry you need 6 months or larger for the gift.  If your registry is already done then you will have to take back the clothes yourself and maybe one or two items you may want anyway.  Clothes do get passed around so if you should get 1 or 2 items that you like better than what your cousin gave you then you can pass those 2 items around to someone else.
