Joey for a girl?

I have been using this board for awhile now but have been terrified to ask the question I originally wanted to ask. Here it goes. 

This is my grandmothers name. Short for nothing. Just Joey. She means the world to me and my other eleven cousins. I have dreamed of using this name for a daughter as long as I can remember and she has memories of us having the discussion of it when I was five.

I know it is a stretch. Really I do. A huge one. But I am stuck on it. Is it really that bad? Comments and opinions are appreciated! Help a girl out.

If I were in your place, I would use Joey as a middle name or use fn Josephine nn Joey.

I know where you're coming from. DD's mn is Pasqualina and there's a fair chance that hypothetical DD#2 will have mn Modestina. Sorry, girls, but it's family.

I agree. Though I'm still not sure I could call her Joey. Sometimes great people have unfortunate names and the world won't know or care about the sentiment. They will just be hearing you call a little girl Joey and think you jumped on the trendy wagon.

I agree with this and would use Joey as the middle name.  Just make sure you have pair it will a great feminine girl name.

If you love the name do not let anyone talk you out of it. I have a friend whose daughter is named Joey and it is actually really cute. My daughters name is Tommi so I love the boy name for girls.

I say if you like it go with it.

I worked with a girl named Johanna but she went by Joey...I like the idea of a more formal first name but calling her Joey, that way you still honour your family but you child would have more options as an adult.

I think it's a beautiful honor for your daughter and happen to think Joey is a cute name for a girl (she could go by Jo later if she wants to like in Little Women). I grew up with a Joey who still uses it as an adult. I'm trying to honor my own grandma except her name was Fannie - not sure I can do that to one of my daughters!

I do not like boy names on girls. At all. But I appreciate the sentiment. Could you use the name Josephine, and call her Joey? I think it's a fine nn.

I also wouldn't give my DD the formal name, Joey. However, I do like it as a nn option. Josephine with the nn Joey is my favorite.

I think it's adorable! You seem really set on it and if so, I wouldn't let anyone except maybe your SO tell you otherwise. I knew a girl Joey, but it was short for Josephine. I personally like just Joey. GL!!

I knew a girl Joey growing up, and we all just took it in stride. She never got made fun of or anything. I don't think it was short for Josephine, either...I think it was just "Joey."

I know a girl Joee (spelled like that) so I've got a good association with it, and she really "wears" her name well.

Do you know if your grandmother actually liked her name? I know a woman named Joey and she hates it, and wished her parents gave her a full name. I'm with the others, use it as a MN or, Joelle some other full name and call her Joey as a nn.

I think it's cute! I have a cousin Joanna who has always gone by Joey, so that's another option if you want a "formal" name and to call her Joey.

This was hard for me.  I didn't read through the other comments but I would think you were a huge fan of Dawson's Creek (I think that was Katie Holmes' character's name).  I am the a huge fan of using family names.  What does your SO say?  Would you be okay with Josephine nn Joey?  Or what if you used it for a boy or for a MN for either sex?
