Anyone tried for a girl?

Wondering if anyone on here has tried to specifically conceive a girl and how it worked? We have two sons and are hoping for a girl (though of course, all that is really important is that the baby is healthy). I've read about so many different things - having sex exactly 3 days before ovulation, the Chinese gender calendar method, eating an acidic diet, low salt intake. I've also read quite a big on the Shettles method, which includes the sex up to 3 days before ovulation, shallow penetration/ejaculation, and for the female to not have an orgasm.

So anyways, has anyone tried these things and gotten pregnant with girls? :) Thanks!

most of the gals on here are "trying" to conceive. You might have better luck asking pregnant women or parents of newborns.

I understand why the OP posted here. We are trying to conceive, so she's asking if any of us are specifically trying to conceive a girl.

Personally I just want to conceive in general!

I have heard though that the further away from your O day that you conceive the more likely of conceiving a girl. I guess the X-chromosome sperms are better swimmers!  Apparently girls are more often unplanned pregnancies than boy babies!

Angela, Here's the explanation as to how the methods that I listed are supposed to influence what happens to the sperm.

According to the theory, male (Y) sperm are faster but more fragile than female (X) sperm. Further, acidic environments harm Y sperm, according to the theory, making conception of a girl more likelyThe Shettles method aims to exploit these two factors.

The Shettles method differs from the Ericsson method, in which the semen is deposited outside the woman and time is given for the fast/slow swimmers to separate before artificial insemination takes place.

[edit]Timing of Intercourse

In order to have a boy insemination should occur as close as possible to the moment of ovulation so that the faster, Y-sperm arrive first and achieve conception, according to the theory. When seeking a girl insemination the couple should seek to have sex 2½ to 3 days before ovulation.

[edit]Sexual Position

Shallow penetration coupled with the sperm deposited close to the entrance favors female conception because the area is more acidic, which inhibits the weaker Y sperm, according to the theory. To allow the Y sperm to reach the egg first (which supposedly moves at a faster rate), deeper penetration should be sought, to deposit the sperm at the least acidic area near the uterus opening.

[edit]Orgasms

Female Orgasm favors male sperm because they make the vaginal environment more alkaline.

I would be happy with anything.

Although my SIL was certain she knew what she was having with both kids based on when she conceived during her cycle and she was right both times so who knows if there is any truth to it or not.

A friend of mine did for a boy (try having sex within your FW, but not super close to ovulation) in her first cycle. They had been charting to TTA for 6 years, so they had pretty good history of when she'd ovulate.  BFN that month.

Next month they said "Forget it!  Me just wants a baby." and just had sex in their FW, not worrying about gender.  BFP that month.  For a girl.

The hard part (I think) about trying for any gender is that you just don't know for sure when you're going to ovulate.  And you just don't know that a male sperm won't be a really great swimmer that day.  And you just don't know that the females won't be hanging around for that egg.

For us, we had sex O-2 and O and got a boy.  Weren't trying..that's just how it happened.

You can try if you want to, but I still think you got a 50/50 shot.

There is a forum at in-gender.com that is all about TTC for a particular sex.  Also, in the book The Impatient Woman's Guide to Getting Pregnant, the author cites studies that suggest doing the opposite of the Shettles method.  I didn't look into them much because I am not hoping for a particular sex, but they may be helpful.

That's an interesting theory and it would be fitting for when DS was conceived, granted it's 50/50 either way.

If I'm not knocked up this cycle I'll go for the little theory next time, we'd love a girl since this is the last baby we are planning for.

I'm pretty sure all these theories work at least 50% of the time. =)

For about $15,000 you can go to a lab that screens for genetic disorders and they can pick out just the female sperm for you.  Probably the only guaranteed way.

I have a little boy and he was unplanned, no idea when I was ovulating but I don't believe in these methods.. I think it all has to do with your DH/SO and what runs in his family, my sons dad has mainly all boys in his family and guess what , we had a boy too..

I just really, really, really want a baby.  I don't know why but this really irks me.  People that "try" for a specific genger have clearly never had to work at TTC.

I heard a whole story about it on NPR.  They said more people were using it for girls than boys in the US, which I guess is surprising because they're using gender selection for boys in other countries (China, India).

I was trying to find a link to it but couldn't seem to track it down.

Sorry that this irks certain people. That was not my intention. However, I don't think it's right to assume that just because my husband and I would like to conceive a girl this time around, means that we haven't had troubles with conception.

That aside, thanks for the opinions and suggestions. :)

Meh.  We didn't try for a specific gender but according to Shettles, DD should have been a boy based on my BFP chart.  I'm sure Shettles "works" about 50% of the time, just like the Chinese Gender chart and Intelligender.

I think it makes sense that XX and XY favor different conditions. One is heavier and slower, so it makes sense that the other would get to the egg first. One is more sensitive to acidity, so it makes sense that a lower pH of the CM would more likely kill those off. I'm not sure why so many people dismiss these ideas as completely ridiculous. There's a lot of logic to it. Of course, with Shettles in particular, the ideal timing is almost impossible since we have no way of knowing when we'll ovulate.
I've looked at the Chinese gender charts just for funsies, and they predicted the opposite with all 3 of my kids.
