Because I was checking Nameberry at midnight...(LIP)

I read the newest blog for tomorrow and its their  New Trends in Baby Names 2013.

 http://nameberry.com/blog/baby-names-2013-14-top-trend-predictions

And my new name crush is On Trend for two categories.

I should have videotaped my facial responses, because I can't hide a thing on my face.  So some of them I'm not remotely surprised at, we've seen loads of double L names and botanical names on here this year.  Some of them made me cringe, even if just a little such as the rise of mid century nick names.  Why just do nick names?  I don't get it.  Other ones made me cringe more.  I can appreciate that you like the cold weather....but naming your child Frost?  And I didn't need to be reminded that William is uber popular (our pick if this is a boy).  There's no convincing DH of another name and I am less certain than ever on girl names now so I can't even wish for that just for the sake of avoiding the popularity issue.

And now I'm sooo paranoid that DS will think his name (Theodore) is girly.  What between TV characters being named it and are a girl, we've had a few posts on it this year, several posts just today on masculine names for girls and now Theodora on the rise.  The irony is too great because I partially love it for the character Theodore Laurence from Little Women, who chose to go by Laurie because the boys called him Dora.  Maybe DS could use his middle name:  Robert.  Oh wait....going near Bobby is out too apparently.  And this is why I get so up in arms about this stuff.  Maybe this one will just be Maggie no matter the sex.

We sometimes use Maggie when calling our male dog named Magnus.Wink

I have been really liking the name Winter lately. In college, my advisor and Prof. of Phonology was a Wynne. I am warming to the idea of Wynne or even Winnie as a nn.

I kind of like the idea of using Wynne or even Winnie as a nn.

I went to school with a girl named Winter but she preferred her middle name instead.  I never understood why, I thought of all the season names Winter was the prettiest.  And prettier than her middle name (Nicole- which was just pretty common).  So I can understand that one but things like Frost and Snow (which totally reminds me of Chrissy from Three's Company)?   On one hand there's hope because they said for middle names but then on the other you know there's going to be a Jack Frost out there somewhere and some how the parents didn't think of that....

Oh dammit, Willa and Wilhelmina on the list. That sucks. I totally forgot about Taylor Hanson naming his daughter Willa. Augustus being on there bums me out too, but SO would have never gone for that one anyways. One of my other favorites, Autumn, is apparently going out of style... Cool I guess.

And I'm all for adventurous mns, but... Ballerina?

I'm pretty bummed that three of the four names we are set on are on that list (Lyla, Wyatt, and Walker). Nora is the only one not on there, but we already know it's growing in popularity.

Maybe I should go back to the drawing board for a bit and see if anything else I love pops out....

Our boy name is still under the radar - phew!  I'm fearing our girl name's popularity rise, but I haven't seen it yet.

I love ancient names and Roman names.  I wish I had the balls to use them.

I saw that last night too, and I honestly raised my eyebrow at a lot of the stuff Nameberry said would be trends.  And while I myself am over the double L names, I think it's going to be a LONG time before those go out of style in the general population.  I wonder if these so-called trends are more for Nameberries/name nerds rather than the baby-naming population at large?

DS's name (Thorsten) falls into two of these categories :( (the first one - Thor, and the Scandinavian one) he's named after someone we know/knew, but no one around here had ever heard the name, so that's why we chose it!

Interesting. My top boy name is Abram, so that fits the ancient name trend. And my top girl name is Iris Wilhelmina. A flower name and a W name. But Wilhelmina was my grandmother's name too. Oh well, they're great names, what can I say.

Yup, I totally agree with you here, fitz. Double L's are going to linger a while longer. And I definitely think these trends are going to be trends in the name-nerd population. There is just no way names like Augustus and Juniper are going to be climbing to the top of the charts. Sure, maybe climb a couple spots, but I don't think there is going to be this big boom for most of these names.

I'm getting so big!

I just want to give you a world as beautiful as you are to me.

Thanks for posting the link. I've been curious to see what the 2012 list will look like.

Aside from having a few boy names that start with the letter "S" and some more traditional names, my list seems to be pretty safe.

Not a fan of the non-traditional MN's.

FWIW my 2 year old is named Lyla and everywhere we go people say, "Oh I LOVE that name!" but we haven't met very many. So I don't think people are "over it."

Saw Maeve at the beginning, and my favorite NN Millie- but I don't like any of the formal first names associated with it, so that's out for kid #3.

I do think the Lion thing is a stretch - especially adding Alex O'Loughlin's new kid Lion - ugh!

Wow I'm shocked how much my names were in line with this :/

i had thought if we had a son next year he would be Leo. I'd also LOVED the full name Thorin Oakenshield from the Hobbit and kind of liked Thorin...could not believe that was on there. Also I had been considering Wesley. Go figure!

It's good to know the trends but it sucks when you see something you thought was fairly off the beaten path become more popular.

My fave name (which DH isn't sold on yet) isn't on there, but one of the likely NN's out of it falls into the W category (but the name doesn't start with W itself.)  DH's fave name is Rosalind, which is somewhere in Uma Thurman's kid's name.

Oh well.  I guess the first priority is going to be finding a name we can agree on, and if it's getting trendy, so be it.  It's impossible to know what everyone else who is currently pregnant is planning to name their kid (although bumping helps.)

There must be a backstory or previous post related to this because I really don't get your rant about Theodora since it an incredibly old and legitimate feminine version of Theodore. Is there really a female tv character named Theodore? :(

I get the irony you refer to but I doubt there will be much real life confusion for your son. Personally, I love the names Theodore, Theodoric and Theodora.
