ER Vent (long)(shortened)

Let me start out by saying I know the hospital in my town is horrible, that's why DH and made the decision to go to a doctor and facility an hour away. Half the town has probably sued them.

Anyways I went to the ER for a UTI last Tuesday and I got some antibiotics. But when I had finished the treatment this Tuesday and it hadn't improved any I made an appt. with my OB.

Last night I had kidney pain in my left side that had me screaming out in pain so DH and I went to the ER at 1:30 am.

The nurse came in and said I still had blood and leukocytes in my urine. She called the on call OB and he told her over the phone that it was just remnants of my UTI and I just needed to take some Tylenol and go home. She kept looking at me like I was wasting her time.

I'm not sure what the correct protocol is here and I know it was late and there probably wasn't much they could have done.

But I never talked to a doctor. They didn't ask me any questions and basically said I would be fine. They discharged me with a paper that said to return if I was having the symptoms I was already having.

So I went to a Dr at our regular facility this morning, (my OB is out of town atm). It turns out that I have a yeast infection and a kidney infection. I ended up getting a shot of antibitotics and two prescriptions. Needless to say I feel so much better already.

ERs are for emergencies.  They miss things because it's a quick view they give you unless you are in imminent danger.  I'm sorry you went through this, but you should have followed up with your regular doctor after your first ER visit.  (Or just made an appointment with your regular doctor in the first place).

I hope your infection clears up & you start feeling better soon.

First Sofamonkey thanks for reading my entire post.

My OB suggested that I go to the ER the first time since I was at the hospital for my glucose test already and he couldn't get me in, but he prescribed the antibiotics. It was definitely a strange situation. I had made the appt to follow up with OB after I finished the set of antibiotics, no point in going if I am being treated already. I was really trying to avoid going to the ER at all costs, I had been having the kidney pain for a few days and I only went because the pain was probably a 7/10.

My biggest problem was that the nurse acted like I was being over dramatic about the situation when I did in fact have a kidney infection and that the doctor diagnosed me over the telephone without even seeing me.

Like I said I wasn't sure of the protocol and I figured they wouldn't be able to help to much but I felt like there was no effort on their part except for take some Tylenol and go home. And they told me to come back to ER if I was experiencing the exact pain I was experiencing at the time.

I'm sure I was just taking it more personally than I should have since I was in so much pain and it was so late. Now that I have calmed down and I feel better I am glad I didn't scream at he nurse or anything.

I guess this is why you don't like that hospital. Drink more water. UTI and Yeast infections are common during pregnancy. If you have to go to ER in future, I would over dramatize the pain and insist on further testing. Otherwise, just wait and go to regular OB.

from the first 2 paragraphs it sounded like you had a kidney infection. Some UTI's can escalate into a kidney infection. Thank god you caught it early. When my sister was younger she had a severe kidney infection, and they almost had to take one of them out. Drink lots of juices with vitamin C in them, they help with UTI's.. thats why they tell you to drink cranberry juice.. goto the bathroom frequently, and using wet wipes after helps too.

Our ER is bad too. The hospital itself is wonderful, but the ER is just insanely unhelpful. I had to go early in pregnancy. I had been experiencing horrible pain in my left lower abdomine and up in my chest. I breathed and I would cry. I went 3 times before they acutally tried to check me out. They realized I was seriously dehydrated. And when they figured out that I had HG they decided to actually start checking me out. They did an ultrasound to see if I had a blood clot in my chest or anything. Then they found alot of fluid in my lower abdomine that was just free ranging. And then realized I seemed to have a lot of fluid in my lungs. They were going to give me a chest X-ray. I was so exhausted that I wasn't thinking straight. Dr didn't even discuss risks fo the X-ray with me as I was 10 weeks pregnant. When they wheeled me to the X-ray room the nurse gave me the risks. Oh My God!! I am not really paranoid, I mean, I still eat cold deli meat, and do all kinds of other things in moderation. But I did not like those risks, especially with having so many problems with my pregnancy as it was. I had her bring me back. The Dr than told me that I had aspiration pneumonia from inhaling so much vomit when I threw up. She told me that it was easy to see that in the ultrasound and wiht the symptoms and everyting it fit perfectly. So really the X-ray was not needed, but they were going to do it anyways!! It took me sitting in the ER for 10 hours to find this out. But on a good note, I was given a US pic of my LO when I was waiting there. A Male nurse first checked the baby out when I had got there, and later brought me back a picture of my little one when I was sitting in the bed waiting for all the tests to be done.

Wow. Firstly, the rude comments directed at the OP are out of line.

OP--I'm sorry you went through this. TBH, if I were in your shoes, I would be filing a compliant against the hospital/that doc. Kidney infections in pregnancy can turn dangerous fairly quickly (uh, sepsis or PTL anyone?).

Encouraging yet another person to work the system does nothing to fix the problem.

I haven't read a single rude comment thus far. OP, sounds like a terrible experience and I'm sorry. I do agree with sofamonkey, though: the ER is for emergencies, and that makes it difficult for nurses/ER doctors to be as thorough as our regular doctors usually have the opportunity to be. I'm just glad to hear that you're doing better.

I have to agree about over dramatizing, besides I don't think it would have mattered to her either way. I never go to the ER unless I feel there is a reason. And after reading how fast kidney pain could escalate into something worse I felt like it was warranted. Thank you all for your responses. This visit to the ER just made me feel so much better about my decision to drive the extra hour. The level of care at my regular facility is amazing. Next time I need the ER I will probably just drive the extra hour. And sofamonkey cuntnugget explains perfectly how the nurse acted and it made me spit a little water when I read this. YesYes

A kidney infection IS an emergency. She was right to go to the ER. They can get very dangerous very fast. Kidney infections can easily lead to septicemia as well as put her baby in danger of preterm labor.

I may be reading your post/comments incorrectly, OP, but it sounds like you either skipped your followup with your OB or you waited too long to schedule it. F/u's are usually 5 to 7 days after antibiotics are started. You need a "cure test" with a UTI even if symptoms are gone, as you can be switched to another antibiotic. Broad spectrum antibiotics are usually what are prescribed in the ER, as official culture results aren't available for a few days. Some bacteria, however, are not fully affected by broadspectrum, hence the need for a f/u after test results are available. I'm sorry you are in pain and that your infection escalated, but you the patient are responsible for timely followup care. I am in agreement, however, that the casual attitude of the ER staff was odd/uncalled for/douchey. Feel better soon.

It was only the day after I finished the antibiotics that I was in the ER. I have tried to very vigilant in keeping up with my appointments hence the visit to another doctor the next day. Which I was going to go to even if I hadn't went to the ER. My OB is out of town atm. Thanks for the info too.

You are absolutely right! I told her to over dramatize the pain because I dont think that she was going into the ER looking for her next fix of oxy. Considering the hospitals track record, and the fact that she just had such a poor experience, I dont think its wrong for her to be more pushy and overly dramatic if god forbid she needs to go back there. Any reasonable person, knowing that their is something deeper going on would do just this to get the care/treatment they need.

And I agree with the PP. I did not see one negative or rude comment. Hope your feeling better OP.

I understand your frustration... Some nurses are the worst in triage, and should really change departments! I have friends that work ER and they can't believe some patients are deemed class 5 when they should be class 3, which messes up with the timely response to an accident or can turn some milder condition into life threatening.

Last time I went to the ER at my hometown hospital, I was paralysed on my right side, couldn't speak and had a hard time thinking straight. I was also 7 weeks pregnant. The people I was with thought it was a CVA, and they got me to the closest hospital, but they sent me home with a tylenol and a tap on the back, what?!

Ended up going to the City's hospital and getting checked (ECG, nerve response and such) to clear out dangerous conditions. It turned out to be a migraine, preceded by visual auras and finally ending in my right side nerves, which explained paralysis. We still scheduled a CT Scan for the end of April, to make sure everything is fine.

In the mean time, I strongly advise anyone with anything more serious than a cold to not go to that hometown hospital... I should have known better, they misdiagnosed family members before, leading to one's death. How do they still have patients is beyond me.

Good luck with your kidney infection, hopefully it goes away nicely and without repercussions. :)
