STMs - Nursing Cover?

So I've given essentially zero thought to this, since I'm going to be a SAHM and I'm just not social enough to think it mattered (plus I have the types of nursing tops that basically cover all but the nipple).  But nursing covers.  There's the boned nursing covers, just attaching a strap to a blanket, or just tossing a blanket over.  What are pros and cons to the different types?

I doubt I'll BF in public often - SAHM too so I'm just going to use a blanket. I got a couple Aden + Anais and they're pretty big and I'm just not a big spender so I'd rather not have to buy anything else right now!

I have 2 nursing covers with the hoop, but that doesn't always "line up." Once I get in the groove, I don't need to look anyway. I'd think attaching a strap toa blanket just helps ensure the blanket isn't kicked off, or otherwise fall down, but I've neever tried it myself. Personally, I think a blanket is easiest because I always have a blanket with baby, and it's quick, don't have to dig through my bag to find a cover, and, like I said before, I don't really have to look - then again, my two have had really good latches and literally 0 problems nursing from the start... so it's never been difficult for me. Others may need to see, which means with a blanket, you're holding it up with one hand and helping baby latch with only one hand.

I'm a SAHM but still nursed in public a decent amount and never used a nursing cover or a cover of any type.I layered tops so my stomach wasn't exposed and the baby's head covered the rest.

I'd never try with a blanket because I'd expect it would fall off etc when baby moves. I'd leave it and get one if you feel the need later. Just think, some babies HATE to be covered up.

I just used a blanket or jacket.  Full disclosure, with my first I was so scared I'd use a dressing room.

I had 3 and didn't like them very much.  The material was hot and scratchy.  I ended up using the aden + anais blankets because they are the perfect weight and they are huge (big enough to tie two corners together so I could put my head through the hole and still have plenty of fabric for coverage).

I was planning on buying one, but I think I'll just use the aden + anais blanket that someone bought me. I wasn't sure what to do with them!

My aunt bought me a nursing scarf. You wear it as a scarf and when it comes time to feed, you un loop it and stick your head through the hole and it fans out to a cover. I was going to get a Bebe Au Lait but this looks like it'll be plenty. I want to say it came from Motherhood.

I bought an actual nursing cover, but am also a SAHM. With both kids, I never really used the nursing cover. A blanket was so much easier. If you're out a lot this may be different, but 80% of the time I nursed at home.

I breastfed my son for 2.5 years.  Although I owned a nursing cover, I only used it for the first month or two before I realized that it is more hassle than it is worth and it draws more attention to what you are doing.  I will not be using it this time either.  If I were you, I would just use a blanket for the early days if you want to.  If you decide then that you would prefer to stay covered up, then invest in a nursing cover up.  Honestly, I think it is not worth getting, but that is just me.

I used one of these with my DD.  I was a SAHM but nursed in public A LOT!  At home I didn't use anything, but this was great for when we were out and about.

Layering is great, especially with a cardigan. If you lift up your shirt to breastfeed, your side/back will be exposed even with a nursing cover (most don't wrap around you). A cardigan will give you the coverage you need. I ended up never using my nursing cover but still managed to breastfeed a ton in public. You can be discreet with normal clothes.

I used this with a blanket, but not very often for nursing. LO was a "distracted" eater and refused to eat unless in the comforts of her own home. I actually used it more for when I had LO in the Moby/Ergo and it was cold/windy outside.

Even as a SAHM you will very likely be going out in public and may need to feed.  I was a working mom but still went out to lunches and such with a SAHM friend of mine weekly, plus we had little play dates and took the kids to the park.  I can tell you her and I bf'd in public equal amounts if not her more.

Ultimately it just depends on how modest you are.  I am not modest at all and could care less who sees what on my body, so I just flat out nursed where ever/whenever my kid needed. (I also was always borderline ready to start a bar fight with anyone that gave me a hard time but no one ever said anything lol.)  I did wear a nursing tank top and just lift my shirt so really I was completely covered, but I never found the need to cover my child's head while she nursed.  If you looked at me it just looked like I had a kid to my boob-no skin really showed.

I did know a few moms though that needed the nursing cover to keep their kid latched though which sort of made me laugh.  If the child wasn't covered they would get distracted and try to look around while nursing so the mom had to cover their kid to make them focus.  I never had that problem-my kid would nurse constantly if I let her so I had no experience like that.  :)

I'm a SAHM and nursed DS for 18mo. There are many many outings in that time. I used a cover even if in the nursing room at the mall or nursing in the car. I found a blanket got kicked off too easily or if outdoors like at the park or zoo the wind can be a factor and nursing cover can get tucked in around the baby and stay in place easily. I like Hooter Hiders and Bebe au Lait brands. You can find some good deals on Babysteals.com or second-hand.

I have a bebe au lait cover and used it all.the.time with DS. (I nursed him for 13.5 months.) I liked that I could look down and see him and didn't have the hassle of fiddling with a blanket. He was also born in the summer, so I didn't often have blankets with me in the beginning. I didn't use anything at home, but I also used a cheaper cover I was given by a friend (**THIS IS SPAM** cover or something) when I pumped at work "just in case." I would not have wanted to use that one for actual nursing, as it was small and very thin.

I have some sewn by friends and a couple that I did myself.  I also used it to cover myself when pumping in a semi-private place at work.

I'm not a great seamstress at all, but even my limited sewing skills were enough to be able to pull off something like this.  Plus, it's much less expensive than buying a cover!
