Our name was taken...what do you think of these new name ideas?

So I had posted earlier that DH and I pretty much decided to name our boy Owen Zephaniah, but it turns out that my DHs brother and his wife picked Owen as a first name. They are due with their boy about 2 weeks before us and were apparently already claiming that name unknown to us until my in-laws told me recently. Its a family name on DH's side so I shouldnt be shocked...but DH didnt think it was his brother's style.  He was mistaken.  Ugh...back to square one.

Would it be totally weird if we used Owen as a middle name with some other first name even though they use it as a first name? DH and his brother are fairly close and though we live in different states, we see them at least a few times a year.  Or would that be too awkward? Or would we need to get their permission first?

I'm kindof favoring the name Elliot now as a first name.  My concern is that it sounds like people are starting to use it for a girls name now.  Should I let that stop me? Also all the different spellings are kind of confusing Eliot/Elliott.  But I keep coming back to it. I still love Zephaniah, but think it might be too much of a mouthful with Elliot.

Want to still use a family name from DH (I have no males in my family I would even want to name a dog after but I like the idea of having some family connection in the name).  After looking through my DH's family tree...some names that we thought might be possibilities (for middle names to go wIth Elliot or first name if we decide against Elliot are:

Dain, Arthur, Bryson, Abram, Asa, Baxter

Last name is Smith.

So Elliot Dain, Elliot Asa, Elliot Arthur, Elliot Bryson, etc...or mabye Bryson Elliot? What do you think? Sorry so long.

I think Elliot Zephaniah sounds fine.

Personally, I wouldn't use Owen if it will be a 1st cousin's name also. My mom named my older brother 5 weeks after my aunt named my cousin the same thing. They are so close in age and we grew up only a few towns away. They are 27 now and it was really annoying calling them the same name and having to differenciate between them (the LN's are the same too).I really like Elliot Bryson!

If you still like Owen, then it would be okay to atleast use it in the MN.  Heck, since its a family name I think it would be okay to still use it as a FN.

In my DH's family, Joseph is a popular family name.  One of his cousins is named Joseph after their gpa.  My nephew's MN is Joseph (my DH's B's and SIL's son).  Our next boy will most likely have the FN Joseph.  We were considering using Joseph for this LO's MN but decided to keep it for a future FN and also wanted to use a name from my side first.  It's a family name, no one owns it.

I think it's fine to use Owen as a MN if you want to.

Personally I wouldn't use Owen as a FN, although since it's a family name that you were planning on using, I don't think you'd be 'in the wrong' if you chose to do so. But, I would completely use Owen as a MN.

I like Elliot Owen better than any of the other MN suggestions you posted.

I would still use Owen as a MN-nothing wrong with that in my opinion and then at least you get your name somewhat :) Love Elliot also!

If Owen is a family name I wouldn't see a problem using it as a middle name. I have a nephew with the first name Michael and if this baby was a boy we had already decided to use it as a middle name.

I think Elliott Owen is a great name and while I have heard of it being used on girls I think it's still predominantly a boy name!  Sorry your first choice was taken but I love Elliott (obviously!).

Owen is seemingly quite popular!

Go with Dain!
It's edgy, it's not overused... I just love it!

I think it is completely fine to use Owen as a middle name.  Your ILs need to realize that 1) it's a family name, so you and DH would be interested in it also and 2) Owen is an increasingly popular name these days.

I really like Elliott Owen.  I also love Elliott Bryson or Bryson Elliott.  Not a fan of Dain or Asa, but Elliott Arthur is okay.  I would use the Elliott spelling and I do not think it has been taken over by the girls.  It's horrible for a girl.

I would totally use Owen as a middle name.  I think it would be nice that cousins share a name in that way.

I think Elliot Owen sounds lovely and it's totally NBD to use cousin's first name as your kiddo's middle name (especially if it's a family name!) I wouldn't worry about people using Elliot as a girl's name, I know it happens here and there but I just don't see it ever becoming unisex.  Very masculine and strong.

I prefer Elliott with two "t's" as the spelling with one "t" is getting popular with girls.

Elliott Bryson or Elliott Owen sound nice. I think it's fine to use Owen in the MN spot since it's a family name that you love.

My cousin and I were both named after our grandmother.  The name is my middle name (I was born first) and her first name.  I kind of like the fact that we have that connection - both to each other and our grandmother.  So as a kid who has gone through it, I wouldn't have a problem with sharing my name with my cousin.

I think that if it's a family name, you could still use it for a middle name...  Elliot Owen is cute!  I also like Bryson Elliot.  We're planning to use Michael as a middle name if our LO is a boy even though it's BIL's name.  But then, my MIL named her first son Jacob Michael and her fourth son Michael Garrett.  Not sure why she reused a name, but whatever.

I still think of Elliot as a boy name, though I do know people are using it for girls too.  I wouldn't let that stop me.

I think you can use Owen as a middle name.  This happened in my family.  I was born first,in January,  Renee Marie.  My cousin born in Feb is Marie Lynn, and the cousin born in March is Theresa Renee.  I guess my mom stole both my aunt's names!  But it's never been a big deal!
