Sleeping in Swing at Night

I've been against this from the day we brought her home, but last night I had no choice. The second I laid her down, she was awake. I hold her and rock her for probably less than a minute, then she'd be asleep again. I ended up putting her in the swing and it was the best night of sleep I've had in seven weeks. She woke up one time to eat and was back asleep again.

My concern is that having her sleep in the swing will cause transition problems later on. Has anyone else experienced this? Normally, she sleeps in her PNP at night and naps in her swing during the day. I don't know what made last night any different, but she wasn't having any part in sleeping in the PNP. Am I worrying about the transition too much? I definitely need my sleep, but I'm willing to sacrifice it longer if it makes things easier for her later on. Any thoughts?

I too was against this but the only way DS would sleep the first 2 weeks was in his swing. We then moved him to his crib and he had no transition issues. Sometimes if he's extra fussy he will still sleep in the swing but has no issues when he goes back to his crib. We try not to make it a habit but sometimes you need to do what you need to do!

I'm scared to death of having bad transition issues myself.  Our 10 week old has slept in his swing EVERY night since he's been home,  He has bad GERD and MFPI and the only place he's comfortable and not spitting up is his swing,   I have no idea how we ever transition to his crib because he really needs to be at an incline that only seems to be offered by the swing,  the crib wedges available aren't high enough to help, not to mention I have no idea how we'd stop him from rolling down the incline.

I'm anxious to hear others response if they had the baby sleep in a swing for an extended period!

You  could do this to keep him from sliding down the incline.  http://tuckersling.com/  I've been thinking of buying it, but haven't bit the bullet, yet.  It's so expensive!

We started off in the crib and she slept okay but not great. Ped suggested swing at night and she usually sleeps great! We'll just have to deal w transition when the time comes. I'm trying to enjoy the rest while I can!

I was so against this! My oldest went right into his crib from the moment he got home from the hospital and had no issue with it. My youngest however is a different story. He will nap an hour or so in his crib, but prefers his swing. I think he likes that it's upright and snugly and the crib feels too big maybe.

For now I'm trying to do naps in the crib to start the transition, but I'm too tired to not put him in the (unmoving) swing at night. We just started getting longer stretches at night, so I don't want to mess with that!

1. DD1 slept in the swing for a couple weeks when she was a baby. She eventually went to her crib ok.

2. I highly highly highly suggest putting her down awake for her to fall asleep on her own. Swaddled. Here's the awake time guideline.

Guideline for Awake time for babies
0-4 weeks: 30-45 minutes
4-6 weeks: 40-60 minutes
6-8 weeks: 40-70 minutes
8-12 weeks: 50-80 minutes
3-4 months: 60-90 minutes
4-5 months: 1 hr to 1.5 hrs
5-6 months: 1.5 hours
6-9 months: 2 hours, give or take 15 minutes

My kid spent weeks 1-9 sleeping on me because he wouldn't sleep flat.  I put him in the bouncer and he STTN on his own for the first time.  He slept in it from 9 weeks to about 5 months old and then started sleeping on his own in the crib just fine.  I think a lot of babies have tummy issues when they try to sleep flat.  I assumed transitioning him to the crib would be a nightmare but it was no big deal at all.  I think by that time his digestive system was more developed so it wasn't an issue to be flat anymore.

Thank you soooo much for this suggestion.  I didn't know a product like this existed and now, after googling and reading reviews I find out there are a couple of options.  Can't wait to talk to our gastroenterologist about these.... They could be life changing.  I can't imagine getting a full nights sleep.  LO doesn't sleep more than 3 hours in the swing and this could change everything!!!!!

When we came home from the hospital LO was sleeping in the PnP for 1-2 hour stretches at a time.  The only time LO would sleep longer was in the swing.  Eventually that didn't work and the only place DS would sleep was his car seat.  He slept like this for 2 months!  We just transitioned from car seat to crib at 3 months old.  His car seat was in our room at night but we moved it into the crib in DS's room for a few days.  After that it was no car seat just the crib.  With his little tummy better developed (he's not upset when he's pooping or gassy anymore!) and he can suck his thumb now, he's doing amazing soothing himself to sleep!  I was concerned about having a hard time with the transition but LO's pedi said not to worry yet since he was still so young.  Good luck!  I'd say try the car seat it's very similar to the swing idea...
