WWYD? Working Mom Question

I have a really good job in a field I love and I'm doing really well at my job.  I've been with the company for almost 8 years and this will be my third child while I've been here. We don't plan on having any more children BTW.  For every other pregnancy I've worked up until the day of my c-section.

But I am having a really rough time now-- my sciatica is horrible, I'm tired all the time and having a 4 year old and 2 year old at home isn't helping.

I want to ask my boss if I can work from home 2 days a week for my last month working (December) just to get off my feet a bit. I am 99.9% sure he will say no problem, but I'm worried that in the back of his mind he will view it as a negative. Performance Evals are done in December and that sets my bonus and salary for next year.... I know he is very reasonable, but still...

WWYD? Suck it up? Or do what you feel like your body needs even if it risks your momentum at work? Confused

You've been with them for 8 years, they know you're a good employee so I don't see the harm in asking.

I'd ask to work from home a couple of days a week.  You've shown how committed you are and you're working until you have the baby.

I would ask. All he can say is no...and it's not like you're asking for this permanently. It's one month.

Hey!

I agre with the PP, I would ask. All they can say is no and you've been there for 8 years. They know you're not just being lazy.

Oh and I feel your pain. I want off this train ride like NOW.

I would ask. You have already developed a rapport with him so I don't think it would effect your evaluation. Unless you completely drop the ball while working from home.

I agree with this. I think it's worth asking :)

I would ask - they know your track record and I would just mention that you worked up until delivery with the last two (something like "I had hoped to be able to work up until delivery like I did with both of my previous pregnancies, but..) just to remind them of that.  As long as your other LOs won't be home and you'll be able to get the work done, it sounds like a great compromise.

Agree with PP. I would ask. I think it shows more dedication, actually. You could just take time off work through disability or FMLA. You're choosing to stick it out, even if it means you have to work from home.

Like others, I think you should ask about it. If you are worried about the evaluations, you could always find a way to phrase it where you address the fact that you are having a lot more pain this time around and that this would allow you to continue to be at peak performance by allowing your body some rest and keeping you focused on your job.

Would the kids still go to daycare? If yes, I say ask. You can let your boss know that the kids won't be around so that there isn't worry on that front.

Yes, the kids would have childcare. I just asked--- don't feel so great about it-- he said he thought it was fine and that he wanted to think about it and ask HR their thoughts because didn't want to set a precedent. But he looked worried about it and now I feel guilty. Ugh. I wish I wasn't such a type-a overachiever sometimes.

Yeah, I would mention that as well as mention that this pregnancy you have dealt with "some unforseen medical issues" that make it much more difficult at work this time, but you feel confident that you would be able to work from home and your OB supports this. Most bosses know they can't really dig into your medical issues, plus he knows your work ethic already.

This - if you're a good performer, and you seem to know your boss well that you figure he'll be amenable, then go for it. the worst he can say is "no". Good luck!

I'm doing the exact same thing, working from home 2 days a week in December and then full time from January 1 til my due date. I think if your boss didn't find it acceptable, he'd say no! GL!
