Diflucan?

Hi Ladies,

So, my itchy lady parts are definitely a yeast infection as I went and had them test to confirm.  My doctor prescribed Diflucan (single dose....but taken on day 1 and day 4) and a high potency topical steroid for the inflammation/itch.

Most of what I read says Diflucan single dose is fine in 2nd/3rd tri....the bad info is about high doses for longer times.  But still, it is a little nerve racking.

Doc also said steroid was fine in such a small dose for a short time.  However, vagisil has helped the itch a ton so am wondering if it is even necessary.

I don't like to take meds and less so when pregnant, but will if necessary.  What do ya'll think?  Any experience w/ this?

Thanks in advance.

Expecting our second baby on February 7, 2013. Trusting Him whatever comes our way.

We lost our first daughter, Hannah Grace on May 4, 2011 at 20 weeks. She was buried on May 14 during a beautiful service at my home church. We are grateful that if she could not be here with us, that she is healed and whole with the Lord. We look forward to the day when we will get to meet her. We love her so much.

This seems to say it is fine: http://www.fda.gov/Drugs/DrugSafety/ucm266030.htm

I am just wondering if others have taken it.

Thanks!

From what I have read Diflucan is safe especially the further along you are. However, typically Diflucan works fine taken just once. I personally would take just the 1 day dose now and wait to see if it clears up on its own (I would try to avoid taking the second dose and the steroid cream) You should start to feel relief within 48 hours so I would just hold out and deal with the itchiness without taking the steroid. But I'm not a doctor so do whatever you feel most comfortable with. If the one day dose doesnt help after 3-4 days then I would talk to your dr again.

Thanks.  Literally the only symptom I have is the itching, and vagisil is helping that.  I am just not sure if it will help the healing....one side is red/swollen/inflamed (sorry for TMI).  But I guess I can wait and see on that, it is not an emergency :)

I agree on just taking the one pill and seeing how it goes.  I am interested to hear if others have taken it and what their experience was.

I go back to doc on Tuesday.  It just seems like doctors are very drug happy.  I love mine, but I still wish they would at least start w/ natural suggestions as first line of defense.  Sigh.

I don't think vagisil will do it on its own since it is a bacterial infection that originates inside the vagina.

This. It won't actually cure the yeast infection it'll just help cover up the itchiness. Some mild yeast infections can clear themselves up naturally but majority of time you will have to take an anti-fungal med (such as diflucan or monistat creams)

I've personally taken diflucan prior to pregnancy and it worked wonders (only needed one dose) the benefit of diflucan over monistat cream is you dont have to be bothered with the messy creams and also sometimes the creams can cause irritation because you are already tender down there.

I was itchy on the outside and my dr prescribed a cream but when I went to pick it up (with insurance) it was $85. Soo passed on that and bought a $3 tube of Vagisil. Helped, but didn't make it go away. Dr. then prescribed Diflucan and it was gone the next day. I also took it with my last pregnancy with no issues.

I know vagisil won't heal the YI, I meant maybe the irritation/inflammation.  I was still hoping to find a natural remedy that would work for the actual YI.

I forgot we have a close family friend who is a pharmacist and has been for 30 years....I have emailed him :)

I took 2 Rxs of Diflucan 1 week apart.  I didn't have the topical cream though.  It went away, baby is good, and no more gross stuff.

I used it during the beginning of the thrid tri :) my baby is just fine (as far as i am aware of lol) I don't think the doc would give you something that could cause harm to the baby..... I had a 3 day supply and it made my life soooo much easier :)

i had a nasty yeast infection in second tri.  my doc suggested diflucan, and it worked like a charm.  i haven't had any problems at all...i've had a textbook pregnancy so far, and i'd take it again if it meant getting rid of a yeast infection.

that being said, if you're really anxious about taking it, maybe get a second opinion?

Thanks for sharing your experience.  I did get a second opinion from a family friend who has been a pharmacist for 30 years....and he said it was fine to use as prescribed for a YI.  I was embarrassed to email him, but glad I did...I will be popping a pill tomorrow :)

I don't know where my medicine anxiety comes from....but it is a primary driver for my desire to have natural childbirth :)
