LO's iron tested low-Ferrous Sulfate

My daughters iron levels were 9.9 at her 9 month check up. They should have been at least 11. Her pediatrician prescribed her Ferrous Sulfate. She is supposed to take 3mL a day. I just feel like that is a lot of iron. I am quite uncomfortable with such a large dose per day.

I feel a bit more uneasy due to the fact that the pharmacist had to call back to the pediatricians office about the doseage they first prescribed her. They had to switch it up. I just don't feel comfortable.

Anyone have experience with this? Do you think I could get her iron levels up naturally with different foods(I plan to call Monday to inquire with the doctor.)

What is the actual dose your LO is getting? 3ml is just the volume. It should be a number followed by milligrams. Each brand/type of FE has a different concentration (mg per ml) so just knowing the ML amount isn't enough. :)

I can't speak to the dosage, but I will say when we were increasing my DD's iron we used floradix, cooked in a cast iron pan, and gave her iron rich foods.

It takes a long time to get iron to go up, it's not like you take a few days of a supplement and it's up again.

This has worked great for us. I was supposed to give LO Poly-vi-sol (for the iron) because he was a preemie, but instead, I did what LalaMama81 does, and I've also been giving him cod liver oil daily since we brought him home (cod liver oil isn't iron-rich itself, but it helps babies absorb iron much better). I have also given him liver that I mash for him (only a few times), and I've made sure he's developed a taste for iron-rich foods like spinach (which he now loves).

It's all paid off... at his 9-month appointment today, his hemoglobin was 13.9... his ped was super-pleased with that so I didn't have to confess that I refused to give him Poly-vi-sol!
