What all are you doing to "play" with LO?

I know this isn't new to me, but this time around it seems I'm running out of ideas to do with LO. We do tummy time and he lays on his back on this activity mat and watches all the lights and moving stuff. Sometimes we sit and stare at each other while I make faces to get him to smile but he can obviously only take so much of each activity before he gets bored. At times he doesn't mind sitting with me and watching tv but after I've done some things with him and then he gets fussy from sitting, the only thing he's content with is going in his swing. I just need some more ideas so I can "play" with him more!

Babies need to sleep. They need very little awake time. At 3.5 months, DD2 has 75 minutes between naps (which is about 30 minutes of playtime). At 1.5 months, I'd recommend about 50 minutes of awake time, which for us is like 5 minutes of "playtime". Then, he should be put down awake to fall asleep on his own after that 50 minutes (eating, diapering, and playtime included).

Guideline for Awake time for babies
0-4 weeks: 30-45 minutes
4-6 weeks: 40-60 minutes
6-8 weeks: 40-70 minutes
8-12 weeks: 50-80 minutes
3-4 months: 60-90 minutes
4-5 months: 1 hr to 1.5 hrs
5-6 months: 1.5 hours
6-9 months: 2 hours, give or take 15 minutes

We do a mix of stuff. Tummy time on her activity mat, then turn her over so she can play with the toys; I'll usually play music while she does these things. The next time, I might play games with her, like "I'm gonna getcha!" type games, or the Itsy-Bitsy-Spider. Another time, I'll set her up in her Bumbo and just talk and sing to her. I also found a cute, educational type video channel on Youtube that teaches the alphabet, numbers, shapes, and a bunch of other things; all of their videos are songs and they use bright colors and lots of repetition. DD loves it, and will be entranced for a couple of songs. I also like to read Dr. Seuss books to her, she likes the bright colors.

She'll only play for about 20-30 minutes at a time now at 11 weeks.

DD doesnt play a ton. Like PPs said, its not a lot of awake time at this point, but when we do play, we do tummy time, and then I usually let her play on her activity mat. Sometimes, I'll have her out in front of me laying on my lap and hold a toy up for her to look at. We also read from time to time. Sometimes its her books and I'll hold them in front of her to look at. A lot of times though it's a book that I'm reading and I just read aloud to her.

As PP said and you probably know, your baby is probably getting fussy because he/she is ready for a nap.  If they've been up for 90 minutes or more including feeding time, try putting them down for nap and see what happens.

As far as activities go, try productiveparenting.com.  Also, you could go to the library and pick up some books and Baby Einstein DVDs.

Honestly I just talk to him for now, get animated with him, and show him mirrors (he loves mirrors & anything with big happy faces on it). It keeps him smiling and he's working on laughing now.
