Crib question for STMs...

Do you recommend getting a crib that converts into a full size bed?

It completely depends on your situation.  For us, it made no sense.  We don't have space in our house for two more full beds.  We'll move DDs to twin bunkbeds soon.  Also, it's possible/likely that your LO will chew the crib rails so you'll want to be extra careful if you plan to keep the crib/bed long term.  We went with the basic Ikea Gulliver cribs.  They convert to a toddler bed (without additional kits/$) but not a full size bed and are only about $100.

We intentionally didn't. I figure that our tastes will change, our decor will change, and we may not even end up using a full sized bed for DS. The crib that I love now might not be the headboard that I love later. Right now, our boys are in bunk beds anyway and the crib isn't even being used.

I did and it was silly of me for my situation! Bought a conv. crib for my first (when I really wanted a sleigh crib, but was trying to be practical)  and I've had all my babies so close together the moment one gets out of the crib the next gets in it, so it hasn't been used as a full size bed yet or probably ever....If you will use it as a full size bed I say go for it though!

Ours only converts to a toddler bed. Which I think is pretty much perfect. Once your child is ready for a twin you'll want to get them better furniture anyways. This is our plan at least for the kids. DD's bed will convert to a toddler bed soon, then when she turns 3 or next Christmas we will get her a big girl bed.

My DD has one, and honestly, just bc I like the backing, she will use it. The back is completely covered if that makes sense. It doesn't have the bars. So, it actually looks like a headboard. lol I'm terrible at explaining this sorry. If she had a crib that was bars all around, I would not use it as a full size bed. I don't think they look good once converted.

ehh.. for the crib we bought we had to buy they kit to convert the crib into a toddler bed. It was more expensive than the actual toddler bed we bought. We are using the same crib with this baby but will not being turning it into a toddler bed

We did but it's kind of silly.  My kiddos have chewed it up since I apparently have woodchucks.  We're still getting plenty of use out of it with 3 LOs.

The conversion to a toddler bed is more important.  Our DDs will share a room with twin beds anyway.

We did and are happy with it.  It's a really solid crib and has transitioned well along the way.  He is currently in the toddler set up and will need to bump up to a bigger bed soon.  Not sure if we'll convert it to the double bed and buy new for the 2nd baby or if we'll buy a new bedroom set for him and have this crib/dresser go with the new baby.  Either way, we want them both to have a matching bedroom furniture set and going with the convertible crib was cheaper than most of the bedroom sets we looked at in our local furniture stores.

Convertible cribs beyond one that can work as a toddler bed are kind of a waste.  By the time the kid is big enough for a twin or full size bed, you'll probably want to replace the whole thing anyway.  Wear and tear, different style, doesn't fit the space, etc.

We bought one for DS1 and I wish someone had convinced me not too.  DS teethed all over his crib and it's not going to be something we'll want to keep around for awhile.  I wish we had just gotten a much cheaper crib only and skipped the convertible.

We did for DS and we plan to do the same for this little one.  DS is over 2, but still in his crib and I have no desire to transition him yet.  I also like the idea that it will consistently be his bed.  Granted, it's beat up from teething, but it's his.  =)

We opted against it because we weren't sure what the crib would look like after 2 kids. We're building DD's full size bed ourselves for about $100 and it'll be much sturdier than what a crib would have converted to.

I love my Graco Lauren.  It's cheap and can turn into a toddler bed without an additional kit, plus the back can be used as a full headboard later on.

I'm very glad we didn't buy one that was more expensive with the intent of keeping it in her room forever.

DD2 will be using the same crib and we bought a cheap toddler bed for DD1 until we get her a full bedroom set.  I'm happy with our choice.

We have one and I'm so glad we did.  We had it in toddler bed mode for about 3 days before we bought a double mattress and converted it.  Now we can snuggle our son to sleep and read books in bed.  He loves it and so do we.  We are going to take his bed back for the baby but will replace it with another double bed frame for him.

This is pretty much us exactly. We also bought the Graco Lauren for all the same reasons.

I will say for us, when we converted the crib to a "toddler bed," we knew it wouldn't work for Ds. We ended up buying him a twin bed and that has worked much better. The toddler bed is really just the crib with the front rail taken off and it becomes more of a day bed. My Ds is really tall for his age and would have outgrown it really fast and then we would have to transition again to a larger bed so we just moved him to the twin immediately. Also, he knew a "big boy bed" looked like mommy and daddy's, so the day bed look threw him off and he thought it was something to play on.

Long story short: I like the convertible cribs only because I like that we will probably use the back as a full size headboard when Ds is much older. But that is our only benefit.

Probably not. We already have a toddler bed that my son will be out of soon and this will most likely be our last baby.

It totally depends.

Honestly I don't really care one way or the other as I'm not too picky about the crib in the first place.  We got one that converts but only because it was something we liked and was $100 on sale.

We didn't. We're not in our "forever" home and don't want to commit to only choosing a house with bedrooms large enough for double beds. Our current house has one tiny bedroom all three kids will be sharing, so the girls have bunk beds and the baby will have a crib. We do have one that converts to a toddler bed and I'm glad for that since we'll likely be in this house when DS is ready to no longer be in a crib (neither of my older two made it to 18 months in a crib) and there's no fitting another twin bed in their room.

We bought a convertible because there weren't really any other options that we saw (that hadn't been recalled). We've been using our crib as a toddler bed for 7 months and will continue to use it after the baby arrives until we move into our new house.  For us it was worth it, but we don't intend on using it as a full size bed after. Besides, DS chewed the hell out of the front rail so it wouldn't look good as a footboard anyway.  We didn't spend a tonne on it so I feel it was worth it.

We have one, and I sort of wish we hadnt spent the money on it.  I just HAD to have this crib, and while I do love the crib, I'm not sure I'm going to want to be tied to this particular furniture style for DD's room for the next 18 years.  Ours is still in good shape, I put one of the rail guards on it while she was teething, so no bite marks.

I inherited a convertible crib as well as an adorable daybed.  We'll transition DD to the daybed and keep the crib as a crib for the new baby.

I would say it depends on your tastes, plans and budget.

No I would not get a crib that converts to a full size bed because do you really know what you will like or what housing environment you will be in 5 years from now?  My mind changes all the time I could not be that committed to a piece of furniture for my kids.    Also do you have all boys or boys and girls?   I have 2 boys now and they each have their own room with single beds but when the 3rd child is born if it is a boy I plan to put the youngest and the baby in the same room.  If I have a girl she will have her own room and the argument now is for my husband's office to disappear or move!
