so frustrated! (nursing bras/clothes related)

I am a FTM and that is probably part of my problem. I have no idea what size to order for nursing bras. I don't have any shopping in my area so everything will have to be done online. I need something to get me by until I know what size I will need after my milk comes. I have always had a hard time bra shopping due to bigger breasts. I was a 38DD before pregnancy. I am now wearing a 40DD in a Lane Bryant bra. I have looked online for quite awhile tonight and I am not sure what size I should order and I need something with support. I have been told that underwires are not good while breastfeeding?? What size would you order if you were me??

Also, What nursing tanks have you ladies used and loved? I assume that those would only be worn at night and around my house...I am sure they don't have much support. Do you ladies plan to buy a bunch of nursing shirts or what do people normally do? I assume a regular shirt will get in the way...Obviously I am new to this and very confused! Baby is coming soon and I am starting to stress about this. (mostly the bras) Thanks for any help! Bonus points for any links to favorite bras or tanks! :)

I'm not much help with a nursing bra as I never found any I loved. I lived in my glamour mom plus sized nursing tank. I am putting new ones on my Christmas list. They aren't cheap 50 but I really found them comfortable and supportive.

I found Bravado bras a few months after I started nursing and LOVE them.  I'd really plan on trying to make it through with one cheap, iffy sized bra until your milk comes in and then levels out, and then go buy your expensive nursing bras.  Otherwise you can waste a ton of money on bras you hate and don't fit well.

That is what I am worried about. I don't want to buy too many right now, but I need something. Where do you buy you Bravado bras? I have been looking at them, but it seems like they are all sold out of sizes that I think would work. I really have no idea on size though.

I agree to buy one for now to hold you over.  I'd buy a cheap one, like a sleep bra.  You can always wear a regular bra out if you're going out for an hour or so.  I often wore regular (even underwire) bras while nursing.

I wear a 38D right now, and I looked everywhere for a decent price.
Last place I looked was Ebay, and I managed to find 3 brand new nursing bras for $10 each.
I snatched them up, and tried them on and they were VERY comfortable.
Soft, stretchy and supportive.
I recommend you check up on Ebay.

I love Leading Lady Bras.

Honestly, I would only get one or two until you know more what your size will be. They will be VERY swollen when your milk comes in but eventually will go down quite a bit.

I've been wearing some fruit of the loom keep your shape sports bras. They have regular straps so its not the v in the back like a normal sports bra. They work so so. Better than the regular sports bras that give me a uniboob or my underwire bras that dig into my belly. I have a love hate relationship with bras in general. My boobs look like a gorillas. No lie. With the big belly and all. No underwire looks like I am wearing a bra with no underwire and underwire looks good but is painful. I'm a 38DD which is tight around and a 40DD the cup is too big.

I'm going to start off with nursing tanks and pray I find a decent bra to be functional and look good.

I was a bra fit specialist for JC Penny. Here's how you measure what size you should try:

Take a tape measure, and measure under your boobs, where your band is. That number is your band size. Lets say this number is 38.

Now, measure the fullest part of your chest. Lets say this number is 41.

For every inch difference, it's a cup size, roughly. (as a starting point, at least) So the fuller the inch difference (actual inch difference instead of "almost" an inch, make sense?) go up another cup size.

I started out 38 D. Now I'm a 42 DD (my ribs have spread out! :( ) and will probably go up to 42 DDD when my milk comes in.  We always suggested to women to get a cup size larger to tide them over until the milk came in fully, so they could come and get measured for the best fit possible.

Hope that helps! Also, I really like the Motherhood brand.

The women's boutique in my local hospital will fit you for and sell you Bravado bras, so I went there.  I'd check out and see from their website if they have any local retailers there so that you can try them on!  I did wait to get fitted until my milk had come in and any engorgement from the initial surge of milk had passed.

Target has some decent nursing tanks that can get you started.  I lived in nowhere'sville with my first.  The medical supply store sold Medela nursing bras.  I went there a few days pp and just tried them on.

I would suggest having something right of the bat.  For the first I had a cheap, cheap bra from walmart that did double duty as a sleep bra later.  Kohl's has a decent selection of nursing bras and they have a sleep bra reasonably priced that is pretty nice.

You could always buy a few sizes right before your due date and then return what doesn't fit.

Thumbs up to this; measure yourself! It isn't rocket science.

I've bought 3 nursing bras already and have worn them through a great deal of my pregnancy; I wear Hot Milk. The back clasps are plentiful to accommodate an expanding ribcage. I think I still have enough up room to get me through engorgement/milk coming in. I will also be getting a Boob "fast food" bra, maybe another "Hot Milk" or Cake (something sexy).

I also use the sleeping bras that are soft cup; very comfy but not as much support. My recommendation is to not buy actual nursing sleep bras, but sleep bras that are identical in design with the overlap that you can simply pull to the side (you pay a shyt ton for the term "nursing").

I also made my own "Glamourmom" style tanks that hook onto my nursing bras. Again, you save a ton of money by just making them yourself; google a DIY!

Motherhood brand is very good, and cheap. I got mine for about $25ish a piece. I also bought them so that I would have some room to grow. I went from a 34DD and am now in a 40F. I have a little bit of room in the cup and two notches on the band. I am hoping this will tide me over. When I got bigger I just got the Motherhood brand nursing bras because they were much cheaper than actually getting Maternity bras in a size that would fit me. Plus I didn't know how long I would be able to wear them, so the cheaper the better.

with my first, I bought nursing tops and don't suggest them - they are ugly and don't work very well.  My favorite nursing bras for starting out are from A Pea in the Pod.  They are soft - you can sleep in them, but they are moderately supportive.  I use them for sleeping now, and after baby is born, and will be bringing them to the hospital with me.  They are very stretchy and will allow for changing boobies, and also allow you to leave the house!

You can get more supportive nursing bras once your milk is in and you can measure yourself how the PP described in her post.

I also have heard of a company called undercover mama.  They sell tops that basically hook up to your nursing bra, and turn it into a nursing tank.  I am going to try that, because I would rather spend $$ on great bras, and then just use that tank when needed.  They are $28, which is cheaper than the good nursing tanks.

I tried the target brand nursing tanks, and they sucked!  I think they are probably good for smaller chested women, but I am large-chested and petite, and they were horrible for me.  I never wore them and actually just threw them out.
