Time the pains. At least 5 contractions, each lasting one minute, for one hour. That's how you know it's time.

Yep, this will usually ensure that you're actually in active labor.  You don't want to head in before the above is satisfied, some people like to labor at home for longer than that.

If you haven't already discussed this with your care provider, do so at your next appointment if you end up not being in labor tonight.  They should have already talked to you about when they would like you to call them and/or head to L&D.

Call your doctor or the hospital on-call doc.

As my OB said, "If you THINK you're in labor, you probably aren't." She also said to go by the 5-1-1 rule; five in one hour lasting one minute.

Most likely just Braxton hicks, as long as they don't hurt. Call to ease your mind.

You're probably experiencing Braxton Hicks' contractions. And 2 an hour is ok. Drink water and lay down for a bit and see if they stop. BH's get more intense as the pregnancy goes on.

You need to calm down. You're fine. Drink some more water, lie down on your left side (for more than 5 minutes...try an hour or so) and relax. You aren't in labor.

Your OB really hasn't told you what to look for or when to call? 2 an hour is nothing.

I've had BH since earlier on in the pregnancy. At 34w I started having them every 10 minutes apart for a whole weekend. I called the on call doctors and followed up with my OB after the weekend and they said it's nothing to worry about as long as I haven't had any other things such as increased discharge or diarrhea. Mainly they suggested as PP said to drink plenty of water and lay down. The frequency and intensity will increase with BH as your pregnancy does. Try to relax and call your OB if you are still concerned.

Look at her post count. I am guessing MUD.

But if not, you just need to empty your bladder, lay down and drink some water. If you are having more than 6 in an hour after an hour of laying down, call the OB on call.

Unless you are not full term (36 weeks plus) and you aren't high risk there is no rush to go to the hospital! All they can do is tell you to wait or send you back home. You are better off staying home until you NEED to go in which is usually around 5-1-1 or 5-1-2. If your contractions do start getting stronger and closer together then you can help them along by walking. Walk and bounce on a yoga ball. But trust me you don't need to go to the hospital yet. Enjoy your time at home.

Call the on-call nurse or your doctor.

BH's are uncomfortable and slightly painful (according to my OB-I'm a FTMtb) but you'll be able you talk and walk through them.  Active labor contractions are very uncomfortable and painful and you'll be unable to talk or walk through them.

Hope you feel better.

If you're having painful contractions every 5 minutes, that last a minute, for an hour, you should go in. They should be painful to the point that you can't talk through them. If you're just feeling your uterus get tight, it's probably Braxton Hicks. If you have more than 6 Braxton Hicks in an hour they usually want you to head into L&D. Drink a big glass of water, lay down, and time your contractions.

I never went into labor naturally with DS, but I'm with the majority of the PPs--- 5-1-1 is the general rule for labor, but an on-call nurse will be able to, hopefully, ease your anxiety.

you will know...labor contractions are painful and regular, and continue to get closer together
