Hungry or looking to soothe?

LO is 13 days old and has been sucking his hands/fingers right away. I would say about day 5 or so. He is constantly acting as if hes desperate to have something in his mouth. This at times confuses me as to whether he just needs to sooth or is giving hunger cues. Even after eating he is still doing this. We have decided to periodically use a pacifier because of this but are still not sure when or how often to use it. At this age we were told no matter how much or when he ate last, if he gives huger cues, to feed him again. But again how do I know if it’s a hunger cue or a need to be soothed cue?

Yeah I would try and offer a bottle, b/c they go through so many growth spurts right away that sometimes it seems like all they do is eat! But if they don't seem that interested try the pacifer. My LO is 2 months and isn't eating quite as often so sometimes I do offer the pacifier first, but if he keeps spitting it out then I do try and feed him right away.

Aria did the same thing up until very recently. Is he giving any other hunger cues? I always waited to see if she did anything else other than sucking her hand...Like pecking or moving toward my nipple. I found it didn't always mean she was hungry.

This actually sounds like a growth spurt to me.  They usually go through a growth spurt around 10-14 days, again at 3 weeks and 6 weeks.  And even if he is just looking to comfort suck, as long as you are ok with it, it's actually good for your supply to let him suck.  If it bothers you, offering a paci is fine as long as you don't notice any issues with his latch.  You really can't over-feed a BF baby.  The worse that will happen is he'll spit up.

Good luck!

I personally would use a paci. If it satisfies him, he's not hungry. If he sucks FURIOUSLY and spits it out, he's hungry.

I agree. My LO has always sucked on his hand, but he starts craning his neck all around when he's really hungry!

I second this.

My LO is doing this constantly as well and she is one month old. She wakes up from every nap screaming and never seems to be satisfied.  I never wants the paci and it is getting frustrating.  She never refuses formula though and so I feel like I am over feeding her.  Sometimes she will take 4 oz ever three hours and then at other times wants to eat another four oz at 2.5 intervals.  I am very frustrated that I don't know if she is hungry or not.

LO will reject the paci after a few if he's really hungry and not just needing to soothe. And if he has his hands, then he will just get more frantic.
