Think I want to use the mirror this time...

Since it's my third and probably final baby I'm thinking i might use the mirror this time. Never did before. Anyone done it? Think I will be scarred for life or what?

I'm getting ready for my first.  In the l&d class we watched a video of a mom who used the mirror and my immediate response was, "oh hell no!".  I might be ready to if we have three-especially if it's the last chance I get.

My DH said that he doesn't want to see her come out.  Has YH watched you birth either of your kids?  Ask him what it was like if he has.

Good luck.

I definitely used the mirror the first time around, and I really felt like it helped.  However, at that point they had pushed so much pitocin in me that I did have an epidural, so I couldn't feel when he was crowning or getting close.  It was great to be able to see what progress I was making because at that point I couldn't feel it, sadly.

My husband watched both our girls come out and said it was two of the best things he's seen in his life and would never miss seeing it ever. This time I'm going to ask for a mirror and I think I'm going to see if my husband can be the one to pull her out the rest of the way and hand her to me. Also the first one we were team green and I made sure that my husband was the one to see it was a girl and tell me.

Didn't have a mirror with DS. I had planned on it, but when it came time, I just felt that if I looked and actually saw what was happening, I'd pass out. I don't regret the decision because at that point in time, I was really just trying to get through it.

This time, I hope to either have FI video tape for me to watch when I am ready (for personal use only!) or do the mirror. We'll just see.

Oh and also, the second daughter because my husband was watching, he saw me poop. Awesome. He said the nurses swept it away so quickly he wasn't even sure what it was at first.

I insisted that I use a mirror with my first during pushing, and actually yelled at the nurse (embarrassing) when they took it away. She said it was in the doctor's way...but my Mama moved it back for me and the OB said it was fine. It helped with pushing to see progress, but it was mostly amazing to really get to see DD come out. I will never forget that, and am definitely not scarred for life! Try it. You can always have them take it away if you don't love it.

I had a mirror with my first and it was neat seeing her come out. I didn't have a mirror with my second. My DH delivered both girls and will deliver our son when he is born.

Indifferent I did.

I was really curious.

You definitely can't un-see it, but it was pretty, uh, cool? It was interesting to be able to see it.

Still haven't decided if I'll use it again.

I am an ER nurse, so I have seen plenty of births.  My husband is a ff/paramedic, so he has actually delivered a baby before (in the back of a car on black friday).  We both agreed that we do NOT want to use the mirror.  We also agreed that he would stay at the head of the bed. I am sure my mom will have a birds eye view over the doctors shoulder though!!

I think it is great when women want to use the mirror, it is just my personal preference not to.

Well yeah, I've had MW assisted medfree births both other times around. So I'm kinda worried that watching the crowning of the head and the two steps forward one step back with the pushing might be discouraging. But I also don't want to miss out. Guess I'll see how I feel.

Not for me. I was wierded out enough when they told me to feel her head coming out. So squashy!

I used the mirror and it was amazing. Seeing what was going on was great for me. And I gave the nurse and doctor a good giggle when I asked "if DD head should just be there, top out, waiting for another contraction... LOL

I am having my 5th and last child and I have never done it. I always tend to cover my eyes with a cloth during delivery...for some reason I am able to get more strength and focus when I block out everything around me...if I used a mirror I would probably pass out...the thought of seeing blood, tearing or episiotomy is too much let alone seeing it. I'll pass this time as well ;)

I recommend it. It helped me with pushing and gave me motivation to keep going because I could see my progress. They took it away when baby started crowning though so I didn't watch the actual delivery.

I found it distracting.  I was too interested in watching and I wasn't pushing correctly.  So the mirror was a no for me and I'm ok with that again.  My husband stayed by my head too.

I had to get an epi unexpectedly and it was the only way I could tell if I was pushing.  I seriously couldn't feel a thing.

I had a mirror last time. It was definitely interesting and didn't scar me for life but it was kind of weird. I am not sure if I want to do it again or not yet.

I am curious too! I'm having a water birth, so I don't know if I'll be able to actually use one, but I think I'd like to see this time.

Dh says its the coolest thing he's ever seen and wants to help catch the baby this time. I think it's WAY different when it's your own baby vs watching someone else give birth.

I'm also laughing at PP who said that you can't un-see it :) Reminds me when a friend recommended I take a look post delivery down there bc it "looked cool." Maybe hers did, but mine looked like a WWII battle zone! ::shudder:: Definitely something I wish I hadn't seen.

I go back and forth. My husband doesn't want to get down there. "I want to remember it the way I left it." Even though it goes back to size, he says he can't unsee it so he would rather not. Whatever. I do want him to announce the sex since we don't know what we are having. I will probably bring one but will make my mind up then

One of the many reasons I don't want to see. I've seen enough births(in school) and I'd rather not be seeing my own anatomy in that way. Funny, I can look at really jacked up medical things but I'd really rather not be staring at my nether regions before, after, and during. I'm probably in the minority on that one though.

I was with a friend for the birth of her first.  I glanced down there once when the head was visible.  Glrk.  Stayed firmly planted at the head of the bed after that.  After that, I have no desire to see what's going on from that point of view.  I might change my mind for baby #2, though.
