Dissapointing 3D ultrasound ... Vent

I was 16w2d when we had our 3D/4D ultrasound on Saturday. We were so excited to have the chance to see our baby in 4D and to find out the gender. This ultrasound was elective, and not performed by my OB office. We were fine with that since the place we went to had certified sonography technicians. 20 minutes in to our appointment, and after flipping from side to side and to my back over and over again (so the tech could get a good angle) the tech zooms in to what looked like nothing at all and proclaimed we're having a boy. Let me clear up that no matter what we are having, we are just thrilled that we have been blessed with the opportunity to bring another life into the world. He just didn't seem very confident in his assumption, and frankly there was nothing on the screen. I was so bummed that we weren't able to find out for sure. 16 weeks isn't too soon, and it should have been obvious. I left in an emotional funk. We have our full anatomy set for Dec 4th, which isn't far away, so we'll find out then. Just needed to vent. Thanks for listening :)

16 wks can be a bit early, I know a lot of places will refund your money if they're wrong. My SIL did an elective and the very earliest they would do it was 17 weeks.

Actually, 16 weeks is rather early to find out the gender and to be 100% correct. External sex organs don't fully develop until at least 20 weeks. Most ultrasound places aren't going to tell you they are 100% sure it's a boy or girl anyways.

I do understand your frustration since you paid for it and were really anxious/excited to figure it out. Hang on, Dec. 4th will be here before you know it!!!!!

I can understand your frustration but 16 weeks is pretty early for a 3D ultrasound anyway. I am surprised they didn't recommend that you go in later. All the places that I have been looking into say they don't recommend it before 24 weeks. We are looking into it b/c when we went in for our anatomy scan they told us we had a 80%chance of a boy b/c the cord was nearby and they couldn't be fully confident. Good luck!

I found out with both babies (girl then boy) at 16 weeks and it was quite obvious with both.  I'd see why you would be disappointed.

I know the elective places in my area won't guarantee the sex is correct until 18 weeks. I'm sorry it didn't go well, and I hope baby is more cooperative at the A/S!

I totally understand how you feel! I had a scan today and they confirmed it was a boy! We found out at 17w with DD and it was very obvious she was a girl. I hope you get your answer on the 4th! Wouldn't it stink if baby wouldn't cooperate? LOL

This.

Did they give you any pics?  It's one thing if they couldn't really guess, but I hope you left with some pics.  You could post here and see what we think.

I'm sorry about the big disappointment. I know a lot of people are able to find out by 16 weeks, but it's still on the early side of things. I guess they should have warned you that there was a chance you couldn't find out the sex yet.

16 weeks is early.  We were told "boy" at 16 weeks and then a very firm "girl" at 20 weeks.

We found out with both of our boys at 16 weeks and it was very obvious that both were boys...while it can be early.. if the tech knows what they are doing and what they are looking for they should be able to  give you a guess to what it is...Both my boys were later confirmed at our 20 week appointments.

16w is still very early.  Yes, some people find out at that point, but its not the norm.

Like everyone else said 16 weeks is on the early side, especially for 100% confidence.  Yes you can tell with some babies but there are some that you can't as well.

Sorry it didn't go as well as you would have liked.

I had the same experience (although the tech did try longer). At the end of the appointment she zoomed in on what she said was a penis and declared we were having a boy, gave us the DVD set to baby boy music, blue booties, and a blue bottle.

Well, I just had my Anatomy Scan and I am most definitely having a girl.

The good news though is if you call them back they'll likely give you a refund or offer to give you a new scan free of charge.

There are places that have great equipment and techs that have personal confidence in being able to tell. I went at 17 weeks with my babies (will go again next week) and they were correct. I didnt start buying anything until after the AS though.

Im sorry you were dissapointed.

I heard that 3d is the worst way to tell gender - 2d being most accurate. Not sure that's true...

That said, we did a 2d elective at 16 weeks (-ish), and what we then learned was "probably" a girl is in fact still a girl (or was at our 18 and 20 week ultrasounds, anyway).

Well that might not be the case, not all 3d place hire certified sonographers. The good ones do, but not all by any means. Even good techs can be wrong at 16 weeks. Here is to hoping it is right :)

Feel your pain I had a bad experience with an elective at 16w. It was a 2D, and the place said they could tell with accuracy at 14 weeks but that it was better to wait till 16.

With future LOs I will just save my money and wait to the official A/S at 20 weeks

I'm lurking, and also didn't read all of the responses. Sue me.

16 weeks IS fine to find out the sex in most cases; if the tech is good and isn't lazy. Most places will tell you not to come before then. "Obvious" I wouldn't say, but with a 2D it should be fine. It took us 40 minutes cause the chord was in the way with our LO.

However, for a 3D/4D it is WAY too early to really get your money's worth. The baby doesn't have near enough fat on it's body to really see any features or anything like that; it hasn't started really putting the weight on yet. Most places won't do them until 28ish weeks, and suggest not trying after 34 because the room is so small, it's hard to get baby turned if they're hiding or something.

Thanks everyone for listening and for your comments Smile.  It wasn't just a 3D/4D ultrasound, they also did 2D.  This is where the tech pointed to what looked like nothing on the screen.  He did not attempt to determine the gender using 3D/4D.  I have 2 children already, ages 9 and 12.  AS was done for both of them at 16 weeks and it was clear as day.  I guess that's why it aggrevated me.  It's been almost 10 years since I was pregnant last, and technology has only gotten better.  I'm not claiming to know better than a certified sonographer.  I was simply venting my frustrations.

Again, for the majority that left considerate comments, thank you :).

I'm getting mine done at Ultrasona on the 6th, i'm 14 weeks now but I decided to wait, cause you'll be able to see" it" (not baby but the sex lol) better lol

They told me to not come until after 14 weeks, then they have some "guidelines"

~That if they don't know the sex to come back free of charge the folowing week

~If the sex is wrong they will give me my money back

So I guess even if they are wrong I still will have piece of mind and get my money back.
