DS ultrascreen

Hello, I am 8 wks and this is my first pregnancy. I have to go for an ultrascreen in 4 weeks to test for any abnormalities and down syndrome. I am starting to get really nervous! I am 30 years old and I know abnormalities can happen as you get older. Has anyone had a false positive on their screening?

You don't really get a positive or negative -  the test will tell you the likelihood of having downs (ie: 1 in 25,000, or if higher risk something like 1 in 50) obviously these numbers are totally made up

I wouldn't worry too much about it - you're not that old :)  If it's something that makes you nervous even after the screening, there is a blood test (MaterniT21) or you can do an amnio which will give you a better idea.

Are you talking about CVS screening?  We decided not to do it because they don't have positives, only "Negative" for abnormalities or "Inconclusive".   I don't think you can get a false positive.  But you may be talking about a different test altogether!

And you're not old at all.  I'm 33 and was told they don't consider me at a higher risk until 35.  Wishing you a low stress test and outcome.

The test I believe you are talking about is a blood test and an ultrasound. They will look for other chromosomal abnormalities as well (such as for Trisomy 18). You will then get a risk factor. My age based risk factor for DS during my last pregnancy (I was 26) was 1 in 720. After the test they lowered it to 1 in 730. For trisomy 18 my age based risk was like 1 in 4000. After the test they lowered it to 1 in 10,000 (which at that time at least was the lowest they go). It is true that your risk does go up as you get older, but 30 isn't old. I will be 29 for this baby and 31+ for my next and I'm not worried about it. Good luck to you.
