How to hide it during the hoilidays

Hi Ladies,

I am about 6 weeks pregnant, and I am obviously super excited (and super sick!). The "morning" sickness (more like all-day sickness) started on the very first day of my sixth week, and it has been awful. I can't move without getting nauseous, and all I have been able to stomach for the past four days have been plain baked potatoes, saltine crackers, ginger ale, and vegetable broth (and I have to really try to choke down those things). I have only thrown up one time, but I feel miserable from the time I wake up until the time I go to sleep.

So - the point - Thanksgiving is this week, and obviously it is a big holiday for food (I live in the South, so most holidays are for food, but I digress). I am really nervous about how we are going to hide this pregnancy from our family. We are not ready to spill the beans yet as it is still pretty early (we've told our parents but no one else in the family knows), but we have three family dinners to attend and both sides of the family know we have been trying. I anticipate that I will not be feeling like eating Thanksgiving food, which will be a big red flag that something is up.

I don't want to lie to our families, but we are not ready to let everyone in on our happy little secret. Anyone have any suggestions on how to deal with this? I am sure many of you may be going through the same thing. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

All I can say is good luck and maybe ask your dr for zofran. That may help you control your m/s and be able to stomach the food.

Can you just tell them you have been dealing with a stomach bug and don't feel up to eating just yet? MS sure feels like a stomach bug to me. :)

My go to move is saying i had a low fever in the morning, headache and stomach hurts. could be a 24 hour bug. if you through in the "fever" and headache people tend to think your sick.

I found that saying i am nauseous or stomach hurts give me up. for some reason if you say low fever they believe you :)

Ditto pp; call your doc and get a prescription for anti nausea meds stat. For me, they just take the edge off enough that I can eat and not want to barf. Eating actually helps settle my stomach as long as I'm on the meds. I can still only manage small amounts, but it's something.

If you need to help hide that you can't drink alcohol, I've found that the no fail method is to accept a drink and take 'pretend' sips, then either pour it out when no one's looking or let H take sips.

I'm sorry you're feeling so horrible! Call your doc, please. You're not alone and the meds are safe. GL.

Well, first off, I intend on having a continuous stream of ginger ale.  It's the only thing that helps me :)

A trick I learned from my childhood is to get food and clump it together at the center of the plate.  Eat what you want and then push the remnants to the outer edge of the plate.  Since the center of the plate is clear, it will look like you've eaten your food even if you haven't touched most of it.  I'm a pretty picky eater, so I've been doing this a long time.

Also, if your family drinks, you can substitute all sorts of things as long as they are in a fancy glass.  Good luck to you and Happy Thanksgiving.

You have 3 dinners to attend...I am sure you could get away with saying you're stuffed from the 1st one...at least at the last 2, right??? We always go to the in-laws 1st so I am always so stuffed for my mom's that I barely eat but, I like her cooking better so, I don't know why I haven't learned my lesson yet:)

 Good Luck!!

I would do as a pp said and use the other dinners as an excuse "I don't want to fill up before blah blah's house" or "wow, I ate too much at blah blah's house"

When I was pregnant with my first I used trying to get pregnant as a reason not to drink when someone asked.  Everyone knew we were trying since my drunk DH told everyone at our wedding that our plan was to try right away. since everyone knew I just saud "I am avoiding alcohol while we are trying" easy enough. Or make a fake drink, whatever!

I've had to deal with this a lot, because we do big dinners for Friday night and Saturday every week (we are religious Jews and keep Shabbat).  Since you'll control your own portions, just take a little bit of whatever it is you think you can stomach.  No one will notice unless you leave giant heaps of food on your plate, and even then you're still probably fine.  You'll be shocked at how little attention people pay to your food.

I definitely agree with the meds. I was SO sick when I was at 7 weeks and my doctor gave me this medicine and it has seriously been a miracle drug!

As for Thanksgiving, even when I wasn't pregnant. I could never eat very much at either dinners (we only have two). Mashed potatoes are typically good when you feel sick.

Another thing a friend of mine told me about over the weekend was Preggie Pops. Just got some today and they are pretty nice. I'm pretty sure they are just candy but sucking on them helps any type of sickness I feel.

But once again, Medicine is amazing! It's not bad to ask for it or admit you need it. You're creating a human being for goodness sakes!

If it were me, I would post something on facebook about how you feel like you are coming down with something and hope it doesn't ruin your Thanksgiving. Then on Thanksgiving I would tell them that it finally hit you last night, or something along those lines.

If you're visiting a bunch of different houses, just say you're really full from the last place and don't have room for much more food. :)

Tell them you have a stomach bug or something.  I've noticed that not many people will question you too closely if you say you've got the trots.
