XP: Those Who Got an IUD

I'm nervous as heck about getting mine put in only because I haven't had an IUD before.

I went on the pill years ago, but with 3 kids keeping me running, I've opted to get an IUD to avoid missing any pills.

I would like to know what you would tell someone to be prepared for when getting an IUD.

Level of pain during insertion? And afterwards?

Thx!

I never had an IUD either and I love it. I got Mirena a few months ago.

It wasn't really painful, so much as very uncomfortable. Think of a regular exam combined with a crampy period.

I was instructed to take one of my high mg motron from my c-section 1 hour priot to my insertion to help with the discomfort. I had a little bit of spotting afterwards for ike 2 days, but nothing major. I cam back a month later to make sure that it was still in place and it  was and it has been great.

I haven't had a period since (although I do have PCOS and didn't really have a period before that either).

Just make sure to talk to your doctor, but I would recommend it to anyone who doesn't want to mess with the pill. I want another child, but not anytime soon, and this way I don't have to worry about b/c and forgetting to take the pill.

GL!

Talk to your doctor about what to expect as far as pain during and after insertion, bleeding and anything else you have questions about. When I went in for my pp check-up, I had no idea which direction I was going to go and asked questions about everything from the mini-pill to IUD's to the shot. I finally decided on Paraguard and although I haven't had it put in yet (I had an slightly abnormal pap at my first appointment at the beginning of my pregnancy and I have to have a coloscopy before an insertion), I pretty much already know what to expect. She said there would probably be slight discomfort and bleeding for the first few days. The bleeding will vary from spotting to like a light period, but she said that your body has to get used to having it in there so expect on and off bleeding for the first month.

I just got one and it was no big deal at all. Worst part was them trying to locate my cervix because apparently it was REALLY high. But I didn't even feel the insertion and no cramping afterwards or bleeding either.

My first attempt at an IUD, the pain was excruciating. I tried to get it done at my 6 week PP check up but my uterus was still too big. I'm not sure if I was still not healed enough or if the doctor was rough or what but it was awful. I could barely sit down on the drive home and I was sore for two days and bled like crazy.

Several months later I tried again and it was painless. Just a little cramping but that was it.I took ibuprofen before hand and I went when I was on my period so my cervix was already open. I also took an anti-anxiety pill that they prescribed me since I was so scared and it calmed my nerves a bit. Wasn't sore afterwards and only had my typical period cramps. From what I have heard and researched, my first experience was the abnormal one.

I got the Paragard and I LOVE LOVE LOVE it. It has changed my period... I now spot a 4 days before my period (never did before) then have 1-2 days of insanely heavy bleeding, then about 3-4 days of very light bleeding. So it seem like I bled forever, however I actually have LESS cramps now then before. I love that it doesn't have any hormones and I never even have to think about it. Best birth control ever!
