Anyone else GBS positive and scared????

Today I found out that I was GBS positive.  I was not happy and have been extremely worried.  I am terrified that they will not be able to give me meds in time or they will not work.  I am not helping my anxiety but am thinking the worse case scenario.  Can anyone relate or give me some comfort.  Very scared!!!!

Try not to worry at all. Doctors today are so on top of things you will have time to get your meds. I tested positive for GBS with my first baby and my water broke a week early, no contractions. And we were about an hour away from the hospital at the time. I was freaking out they wouldn't be able to get the meds in me in time but with your first baby, it can take HOURS to get ready to push. As long as you get 4 hours of meds prior to pushing, your fine. My water broke at 10am, meds started at 2pm, baby girl didn't come until almost 4am the next day! Even if you don't get the meds in time, the risk is slim for baby and they would just give baby some antibiotics and monitor for a while. The 4 hour window for you to get your meds is just being on the safe side. I highly doubt you will go into labor and in less than 4 hours be pushing, so try to just relax and know the doctor's have your back :)

I was GBS positive last time as well - my doctor wasn't concerned about it, they just said I would get penicillin every 4 hours until delivery. They check with the micro lab to make sure the strain you have is sensitive to first line antibiotics - if by chance they aren't, or if you have an allergy, they will just use a different one the bacteria is sensitive to. No worries!

I was GBS+, had a really fast labor so could only get 1 of the 2 doses of antibiotics and DS was fine. They monitored him more closely but that was it.

Try not to worry.

Even if you aren't administered antibiotics the chances of you passing GBS is only 1 in 200 which is actually fairly low when you think of all the statistics we see throughout pregnancy.

Try not to stress. It is manageable, and it is very common among pregnancy

I'm not GBS+ this time, no was I last time, but I was my first pregnancy... and that labor went so fast I didn't get the full dose of meds before DS was born, and he was com.pletely fine! I think he had a bit longer stay in the nursery before being sent back to my recovery room, so they could monitor him (I only got 3 hours of the 4 hour dose... labor was 6 hours from my house with reg. contractions at 7p to his birth at 1a). I wasn't concerned at all when I found out I was GBS+, and it comes and goes (obviously since I was - last year and again this year). I think there's only a small chance it will pass to the baby anyway, and the meds drastically reduce that already slim chance, so calm down and don't worry about it.

This...

Also if you go over to the Natural Birth board they usually have some herbal remedies that supposedly can help it reduce/make it go away prior to L&D...

Not to mention even if you test positive now, you may not actually be positive when you go into labor... GBS comes and goes naturally

I have a question. I found out that I am GBS positive (Im 28 weeks)

They routinely do test for this when your 36 weeks, right?

And how long is the treatment for it? Do you take antibiotics like you would for a UTI? Or does it last all the way to L&D?

Don't be scared.

They test because it's treatable and they'd like to treat it before the need arises to avoid less panic. Don't worry. You and baby will be fine!

Relax. Read up. Talk to your doctor.

I had it the first time and I have it this time too. It's not a big deal.

And as a FTM it is highly uniklely that you will have such a fast labour that you don't make it to the hospital for a round of antibiotics before the baby is born. Highly unlikely.

And if you didn't get antibiotics they would closely monitor your baby for signs of infection and then treat him/her.

It's something like 1 in 4 women have GBS and if it's not treated during labour there is a 1 in 200 chance it could pass to the baby.

I was GBS positive during my last pregnancy.  I was only in labor at the hospital 3 hours before my son was born so I was not able to get the needed antibiotics.  I was fine and my son was fine.  It was no big deal.

This.  Even when left untreated rates of transmission are very low.  Not only that, but since they know you're GBS+ they'll know what to look for as far as warning signs from your LO so they would be able to jump on it quickly if any problems arise.  It's really not something I would worry about at all.  Worrying definitely won't help anything and it's pretty low on the list of things to be concerned with IMO.

something to note too -it can come and go. really they should be testing for it at the very end, but they typically do it at 36 weeks because some people go into labor early. It's just easier for them. Some people may deliver with it and not even know because they can develop it later, and yours may go away between now and birth!

They'll probably retest you - and if they aren't planning on retesting you ask to be retested at 36 weeks. I think the results are only considered valid for 4 weeks but that might not be true. Start eating some yogurt with probiotics daily and that might help you test negative next time. They put you on an antibiotic at the hospital, I'm not sure how long they leave you on it, GBS isn't a big deal until you're pushing a baby through it

Relax, it's no big deal at all, GBS is a normal vaginal bacteria that can cause complications if you are unaware of it, which is why they test for it in the first place.  They will give you antibiotics when you are in labor, and everything will be just fine.

I'm annoyed, but not stressed or scared. I would have liked to be able to labour at home as long as possible; if my water breaks early on I will no longer have that option. Sigh.
