General spelling question

So, we keep seeing people list all these "unusually" spelled names.

I would like an "unusual" or "uncommon" name for my child, but I want it spelled the way the name has previously been found, even if it's not a very commonly found name.  That, to me, makes the name more "special."

Can someone explain to me why there is a desire to spell a name "unusually"?  For example, if in my class growing up, there are girls named Kelly, Kelli, Kellie, and Kelley, as far as I'm concerned, we still have four girls named "Kelly" who are all going to get confused with each other.  Spelling it "uniquely" doesn't fix that.

Why wouldn't a parent want the most  traditional, expected spelling of a name, so the kid won't have to always correct people on how to spell their name?

I cannot explain this, and I fully agree with you. The worst is when it's a common name spelled, frankly, wrong. I am a teacher and I have seen some doozys. Jewelia? Gennifer? Madysyn? WHY?!? The name is not unique! It's the same name SPELLED WRONG! The only thing you are achieving is never having anyone spell your child's name correctly...ever!! I think it'll be annoying in the future for the kids to have to deal with that.

</endrant> lol!

I think you'll find that you're preaching to the choir about that here. I'm not a fan of youneek spellings and neither are the majority of other posters on this board.

We chose a very unusual name for our 1st DD but spelled it the traditional way. Not that it will help people know how to spell or pronounce it in her case, it's a name that's pretty much unheard of in the US. Our 2nd DD has a more common name and we spelled it one of the standard, legit ways.

Honestly, I don't get it.

I think some do it because they want their child to be unique (because obviously having a unique name makes your kid sooooo special...Confused).

...but while they think it is unique and special. I just think it makes the parents look stupid and uneducated...and I feel bad for the kids.

Changing a spelling of a name does not make them unique! When someone says little Jaxsynn, Ryanne, Alexys, Quatherynn, or Jayms' name out loud...it "sounds" the same as Jackson, Ryan, Alexis, Katherine/Catherine, or James. In addition to having that popular name (not an issue, really), they also have to spell their name all the time (and get eye rolls behind their back).

I think what you are saying (and many do, including myself in terms of my long list) about choosing an uncommon/semi-uncommon yet legit and correctly spelled name is a great thing to do, as long as you love the name, is a great thing to do.

I agree and I'm just as confused as you are. I've always wanted my name to be spelled traditionally. It's too confusing for others and it doesn't have to be.

I agree.

However, I do prefer Erik to Eric and Jakob to Jacob so perhaps I'm a hypocrite...

I have no problem with Erik and Jakob.  Both are legit variants.  Jakob is actually from the same root as Jacob but is a variant spelling in Scandinavia, Germany, etc.

I think the bigger problem would be when you spell it Aerik or Jaykop.

I have a problem with youneek names. Some names that people spell slightly different for family reasons, I'm ok with but adding a million extra letters or replacing letters with y's and k's, I don't get it!

Lovely traditional names spelt incorrectly are awful!!! I soooo don't get it and that's a popular opinion on this board.

However, I love unusual names but spelt the way they traditionally are. EG. My son is Hudson (which still isn't popular here) and we want it spelt the correct way. Not Hudsyn or something!

Our second son will be Ethan. I couldn't imagine taking a name so beautiful like that (that is very common) and changing it just to be you-neek. It really takes away from the name.

I agree with this. There are lots of names that have variant spellings or sound-alikes in different languages. In those cases, I think that whatever spelling has the most relevance for your language/ethnicity/family traditions is fine. Emily and Emilie are both fine, but I'd veto Emmaleigh.

I don't like unique spellings unless they are common also.  Like Carrie, can also be Kerry, Keri, etc.  None of these are way out there. Kelly and Kellie aren't too bad. It is when you get the really weird ones that start to bother me.

I wish I knew!  It's not unique, and makes the parents look uneducated and like they can't spell.  The kid is going to have to spell his/her name for everyone forever.
