Size

Old acquaintance saw me last week and guessed that I must have been about 15 weeks based on how "small" I was. She was shocked when I said 19 weeks. I don't think I'm that big either, I could pass for just a well fed girl. Is this any indication of how big or small I'll be as time progresses? I'm 5 feet tall and my H is short too. Maybe we have a small baby??

I get told frequently that I look so "small" which used to offend me at first because I thought people were implying I wasn't eating enough or something. I wasn't showing at all until 22 weeks. But at my A/S the tech implied that I would likely have a big baby. =/ I guess it's all a matter of how you carry but I'm still hoping for a smaller but healthy baby *fingers crossed* (I am very.very afraid of tearing! >.<

I had a big baby with DS. He was 9lbs. But I started to tear because his head is HUGE, lol. The Dr did an episiotomy before I could tear too far. The episiotomy heals faster than a natural tear. And yeah I was miserable for about the first week, couldn't sit right, but using Tucks pads helped, and the hospital sent me home with pain meds and a numbing spray. Just spray it in the area and it numbs the whole thing. That spray was my life saver.

Not true, you could tear a few milimeters or centimeters and an OB can cut you an inch or more.

Russianmommy if this is your first baby you will be a little on the smaller side however a few days back you told some one on this board to pick her battles when she was upset about being called big. Why not just hope for a healthy baby and call it a day with this type of post.

I agree with both these points. Episiotomies definitely don't heal faster, and if you get one, you're likely to tear more than if you just tear naturally.

Being small isn't a bad thing. I have a huge bump and people are shocked when I'm only 22 weeks. So, people are going to have comments no matter what size you are. As long as your Dr/MW isn't worried, then relax. :)

I'm just over 5 ft tall, but I feel like I look further along than I am.Baby is small, in the 25th percentile as measures at the A/S and DH and I are both shorter and were small babies, so I think it's just how you're carrying. I had a friend who was tiny her entire pregnancy who had a 9 lb baby

I was often told I looked small with DS. I didn't show for a long time and even at the end didn't look pregnant from behind. Even the OBs and nurses guessed a "small" 7 lbish baby. Um nope, 9 lbs!

No, how you are carrying/showing at 19w has absolutely nothing to do with how big or small your baby will be when its born.

Ditto. A lot of FTMs don't even show at all by 19 weeks. I was barely showing at 19 weeks, and I was measuring big by 28 weeks. I had an 8 lb. kid.

I agree with both these points. Episiotomies definitely don't heal faster, and if you get one, you're likely to tear more than if you just tear naturally.

All of this regarding the tearing vs episiotomies.  All the doctors and midwives I've had prefer to let you tear naturally.  They said it heals faster because it's where your body naturally wants/needs to tear vs where they think it needs to be cut.

Size of the belly doesn't equal size of the baby.  First time moms tend to show later.  And a lot of it depends your build, size, where you gain your weight and your uterus.  I have a tilted uterus.  So even though this is my second, people tell me everyday I don't even look pregnant. "Are you sure?" is generally the response I get when I mention being pregnant.

It's actually old school and out of date for an OB to do an episiotomy unless there is a really serious reason to do so (fetal distress and baby needs to get out NOW).  You are less likely to have a severe tear if you tear naturally rather than being cut.  They have actually done studies on this.  Fewer 3rd and 4th degree tears (into the rectum) with natural tears.

I am not even kidding when I say that from 18 weeks to 20 weeks, I look like a different person. (Or my midsection looks like a different person's midsection, anyway.) I was definitely looking chubby before, but lately I've really blown up.

Also, are you wearing maternity clothes? I have mainly just been wearing my regular clothes that still fit, but I went shopping for maternity clothes a few days ago, and that made a HUGE difference. My regular clothes were just cutting into the middle of my bump and making me look chubby. Maternity clothes accentuate my bump and make me look pregnant.

But give it a couple more weeks and I bet you'll be showing a lot more... things change quickly at this point!

I carry very small and have normal size babies (this baby is measuring right where it should and DS was just about 7 lbs).  Last time around, the first time a stranger mentioned me being pregnant, I was 28 weeks along and this time I don't think anyone would assume I was pregnant at just about 22 weeks.  I definately anticipated carrying bigger the 2nd time around because everyone said you get soooo much bigger the 2nd time.  Apparently my body just doesn't carry that way.  I'll count my blessings because I think I was far less uncomfortable further on than friends of mine that have gone through pregnancies.
