wdyt?  DH loves it and I do too, but not a fan of Matt.  Will that nickname be inevitable??

I like it. I don't think any nickname is inevitable when your LO is younger. "Sorry we don't call him Matt, it's Matteo". I've heard of the NN Teo though, which I think is a cuter spin off from Matteo.

It's a good name and I think you can probably avoid nicknames. Although, I like PP's suggestion of Teo as a nn.

LOVE Matteo. Matt is completely avoidable, either saying "We call him Matteo, not Matt" or you could call him Matte (Mah-Tay, like latte with an M), that's the traditional Italian NN for Matteo

I really love this name. I've only known one Matteo in my life, and it never crossed my mind to call him Matt. And FWIW, he's cute, funny, and very kind. Go for it!

I love Matteo ! I wouldn't worry about other people calling him Matt if you and your SO don't. When we named DS Harrison I was super worried about the nn Harry (which I didn't care for at the time). No one has called him Harry though because no one hears us use that as a nn. If you love Matteo go for it !!

NNs can be avoided.  Like PPs have said you just have to let people know (so as long as you don't mind telling people 'we call him Matteo, not Matt' I think its NBD). 

Personally, I'm not a huge fan of Matteo.

I think NNs can be avoided, you'll just have to correct people if you hear them using one.

I like the name. My neighbors just named their son this. The Dad is from Spain so both of their sons have spanish names. I don't think anyone would shorten it to Matt since they do speak Spanish and don't usually use Matt as a name.

Love it & I think you can avoid Matt if that's what you choose. If he wants to go by Matt when he's older though you'll have to be able to accept that.

I love Mateo/Matteo and think the nn Teo is a great nn. Matt isn't bad as far as nn go either, and I think that you might be able to avoid it when they are little...but a teenager/school aged child might prefer Matt and you can't really control it once they are old enough to want to be called something specific, so if you HATE the nn Matt I wouldn't use it.
