Question about pie....

Completely random but cant find anything solid online either way so just curious what you ladies think. For Thanksgiving I'm making a butterscotch pie which TECHNICALLY is suppose to be topped with meringue (like a lemon meringue pie) The only "cooking" the meringue would get is under the broiler for a few minutes to brown. Would this be safe to eat since it's just raw whipped egg whites?

I think it would be more than fine.

I'd eat it. But, then again, I still eat my eggs sunny side up. If you're worried, you could always go without it or make a smaller pie for you w/o.

I think you'll be fine, but you could use pasteurized eggs.

Hmmm....good point with the pasteurized eggs. Or I could just make the baking easier on myself and completely leave out the meringue all together!

I'd probably do this :) but then again, I'm not a fan of meringue to begin with.

Now I'm picturing drizzling chocolate sauce across the top instead... mmmm... butterscotch and chocolate. Now I'm craving sweets. Where'd I hide the extra Halloween candy?

Butterscotch pie, what??? I have never heard of such a thing but I need to find a recipe asap!

I would eat the meringue. :) (I'd probably eat the whole pie given the op)

It is cooked.  Browning is almost burning, so they are plenty cooked!

lol I've never heard of it either until my father in law mentioned that its one of his favorites so I decided to make it. All the recipes I've found online are pretty much identical to making almost a caramel and really thickening it to the point of a custard and then just baking it for a few minutes in the oven afterwards. Warm butterscotch/caramel custard pie thingy sound delicious! lol

Also making minced meat.....we'll see how that goes o_0
