How did you find your RE?

The second my OB mentioned Clomid I knew (from you guys!) that I needed to find an RE before going down that road.

I've started online research on doctors, locations, what kind of insurance they accept, etc.

So, how did you find your RE?

This isn't going to help you, but I found mine (that DH and I will eventually be seeing) through my SIL.  It's the RE that did her monitoring.

I looked on the local hospitals web page. We have a large hospital system that is a teaching and research facility. They have a RE that is top of his specialty. He recently finished some break through research on PCOS. I don't need one and hopefully will not. But, I am a nuerotic planner and wanted to see what was available in this area.

There are only 2 in my city that are in network providers for my insurance so that kind of narrows it down. I don't have any IF coverage but I only pay the insurance rate for everything so that helps a lot. I asked my OBGYN office and they recommended the one I went with.

ETA: I don't really like my RE and wish I would have researched it better. This site has a lot of good info:  http://www.asrm.org/

My OB referred me to one and I had some testing there but overall a pretty negative experience and didnt think it would work for me moving forward so I found a new one. I checked my insurance to see which ones were covered and then started online research. My best results came from googling the doctor or practices name + RE + online reviews. I also tried using thebump.com in place of online reviews and that pulled up various threads from 3T or the Infertility boards where REs in my area had been discussed. I also read threads on a bunch of other TTC sites, basically whatever I could get my hands on. Those reviews mainly gave me a feel for the doctor's personality and ease of dealing with the office staff, etc.

I checked the sart stats for their clinic's success rates. One thing to keep in mind on there is that it's only IVF stats listed and if your clinic has multiple locations and doesn't do IVF at all of them then you need to look up the stats by the office that does. That through me off a bit.  Lastly, the online reviews let me know that certain offices don't take patients with certain diagnoses or lab values at a certain point, which can alter their success numbers.

Sorry this is so long. I had also had a physical scheduled recently and my PCP knew we were trying and asked how it was going. She then told me she had used an RE as well and gave her recommendation.

Good luck!

Thanks ladies. I'm in Minneapolis so the Mayo Clinic is obviously an option but it is about an hour drive. Some of the top REs in the country are there.

Otherwise there are some clinics in the metro area here. I am jumping the gun a bit becuase I don't think I need the test yet and hopefully I don't. Just being prepared!

This is also how I found mine... I had a good experience with Him and felt comfortable going back.  I also did tons of research online and the one I had used was at the top of the list for success rates etc. I asked a ton on the nest and bump boards and they had some other recs but I went with my gut and personal experience. I stressed about this, as I live in an area with TONS of RE's and it was overwhelming choosing.  I am out of pocket on all fertility testing, medication, and treatments.  So insurance played no factor.  I wanted the best even if that was more expensive.

Good luck!!

I asked my OB. When he offered a round of Clomid, I said I thought it'd be better to have an RE handle that sort of thing, so he gave me two names of two REs in my insurance network.

TTC since October 2011.
DX with Non-IR PCOS in October 2012.
Missing RIGHT tube due to a prior surgery to remove cyst-zilla (40 lbs!) at age 12.
HSG showed tube was blocked - cleared by dye. DON'T DO CLOMID WITHOUT AN HSG!
Cycle #8 with 50mg Clomid & TI = BFN
Cycle #9 with 50mg Clomid & TI = No response.
Cycle #10 with Clomid 100mg + Ovidrel shot = BFN
Cycle #11 is a break cycle. Cycle #12 is a break cycle. (The break so nice, she did it twice!)

I asked my OB for recommendations. She gave me several names and told me her general impressions--she's awesome like that. I read up online--lots of reviews were right here on the bump.

We have no IF insurance coverage, so that was a non-issue.

Admittedly, when the time came, I just decided to go to the RE office within my healthcare network--despite not having insurance coverage--because I hoped s/he would be able to pull up my prior testing automatically (was partially true), the office locations seemed convenient, and in the end, "clicking" with your doctor is an unknown until you've actually met him or her.

I do like my doc, so my "lazy" method worked out just fine so far. BTW, we are unexplained infertility.

TTC #1 since Oct. 2010. Tests normal.

This won't help you, but I found my RE through a research study.  Someone posted about the study on the IF board and when I googled it the name of a local clinic came up, so I called them.  Otherwise, I would've started with sart.org (to check success rates), then checked to see who takes our insurance.

I asked my OB's office for a refferal, but they were really slow getting back to me (typical for his office staff).

I ended up finding some names on my insurance website (I don't have infertility coverage, but I want to make sure anything that may be able to be billed as something other than infertility is covered) and then researched those offices.  I looked at patient satisfaction scores and read what I could about the offices and the doctors.  I also looked for success rates, but could only find rates for IVF (which the published rates for the two IVF clinics I could find were statistically the same).

The office I chose had the highest satisfaction ratings on several websites and is affiliated with one of the area's top hospitals and universities.  They also did the first successful IVF treatment in the state.  I called the department's appointment information line and made an appointment with the first available doctor (who happened to be the doctor I was looking into).

DH: SA is good
Me: CD 3 blood work is good, HSG all clear, 7 DPO blood work shows low progesterone

April 2013: Unmedicated IUI after yet another bad bad PCT. = BFN
Cultures find a bacterial infection that could harm fertility, DH and I both start antibiotics.

When I told my RE that DH and I were ready to start TTC, she referred me to my RE for a consultation based on my medical history.  After running some tests, my RE thinks I'm going to be just fine on my own, but says I should call after 6 months of trying if nothing happens (rather than a full year).  I had a wonderful experience with her - she was everything I was looking for in an RE.  Friendly, professional, and she really knows her stuff.  As much as I enjoyed her though, I'm really hoping I don't have to go down that road.

Since we are OOP we knew we could go anywhere we wanted. There are three main fertility clinics in our area. The first one, I had a friend who had a bad experience so I automatically ruled them out. That left 2, one is much more convenient, but the other has a higher IVF success rate, so we decided to go w/ the closer RE (who is still a really good RE), but if we need to move on to IVF we will go to the one further away for at least a second opinion if not to pursue IVF w/ them.

ETA: you can find success rates here: http://www.sart.org/

My insurance has a website that you can search doctors that are in network. So that, google, and a lot of researching other peoples reviews helped me decide. On our first meeting with the doctor and the staff members, we knew we made a good decision.

I'm still with my OB now, she is monitoring me and did all the proper testing, she specializes in Endocrinology as well, but if I move on to IUI or IVF I will probably see an official RE. I got the name of one from our friends who did IVF there. They tried out a few places. The one they chose has the highest success rate in the area.

1. Referral from my OB/GYN

2. Called my GP who is WONDERFUL and has referred me to great people in the past. She gave me the name of 3 different REs.

3. Talked to a friend who saw an RE. We have 2 other mutual friends that also saw an RE.

Between all of those 3 there was a common name.  2 of my friends that saw my RE now have babies after trying for years. GP and OB/GYN both know the RE and all work well together.
