FTM question: Cradle Bedding

Mobile users: FTM question: Cradle Bedding.

This may be a silly question, but I've asked several family members and they can't seem to give me a conclusive answer so I figured I'd ask you ladies.

I'm using a cradle for the first few months of LO's life and then a crib later on when she gets bigger, so I've been looking at both crib and cradle bedding online. I've heard so much talk about bumpers being dangerous in cribs and noticed that most bedding sets for cribs don't come with bumpers, if you want them you have to buy them separately. However, all of the cradle bedding sets I've found always come with three things: sheet, blanket, and bumpers.

My question is, are bumpers on cradles as "dangerous" as bumpers on cribs? It seems to me that bumpers on cradles would be more dangerous, as it's a smaller, more confined space. But I'm a silly first time mommy and I just want to be sure. Thanks in advance for the insight.

Yes, in addition to the suffocation risk, they also reduce airflow, which is one of the potential causes of SIDS. It doesn't matter if it's in a crib or cradle.

That's what I figured. The fact that crib bedding sets didn't come with bumpers and the cradle ones did just confused me. Thanks for taking the time to reply.

Yes, IMO I would just buy a fitted sheet for you craddle because you don't really need extra blankets in with the baby because they can also be hazardous.  I have a craddle for my room that will hold LO until about 3 months.  We plan to swaddles so I found some mattress protectors that were the perfect size and a couple sheets that fit.  Its much cheaper and practical then they bedding sets.

That's a good idea. I was actually trying to wrap my brain around spending fifty dollars on a blanket (that might not even get used) and one sheet when I would have to throw the bumpers away. It'll probably be much easier just to find a couple of sheets. Thanks for the advice :)

I also use a craddle. Personally you don't need a bedding set for a crib or a craddle but especailly not for a craddle. You shouldn't use the bumper and there is really no need to have the blanket either. This would be somewhere you could save and just buy two fitted sheets for the craddle.

National Institute of Health, March of Dimes, etc all now say that you should put NOTHING in the crib but the baby (including bumpers, pillows, etc), and just use a sleep sack instead of a blanket. Manufacturers just care about selling you more stuff, not safety.

I would not use bumpers in a cradle.  All we have in our cradle is the mattress, and the best sheet I found for it is actually a pillow case!  The cradle sheets kept shrinking and curling up the ends of the mattress, so I took two pillowcases and just pulled on on the mattress from one end and pulled another over the other end.  Fit very nicely.

ETA:  Like the others said, I also used a sleep sack with the swaddle arm cover thing when baby was little and then a sleep sack without the swaddler part later.
