Calvin

We just found out we are having a boy and may have agreed on the name Calvin James.  I think Calvin is a nice, solidly masculine name, and this was the only name I convinced DH to let me use my dad's name as mn with.  DH loves this name, with possible nn CJ.

So, here is the problem: Calvin means "bald" or "little bald one."  A lot of famous, repectable men in history have had the name, though.  And plus, the only real pop culture reference is "Calvin & Hobbs" which will probably not be as recognizable/well-known to baby's generation. 

 Do the good things about the name outweigh the terrible meaning?

Calvin is nms, but I don't think the bad outweighs the good. If you both like it, go for it! fwiw - i think CJ is adorable

Agreed. My son's name means "ancient" but we still used it because we loved it.

I really like Calvin a lot. Good choice.

I also think the Calvin and Hobbes association is awesome. :)

DH has several books with Calvin & Hobbes cartoons and is a huge fan.  I asked him if that association would bother him or affect the meaning, but he still loves it.  In fact, I think he is secretly excited to introduce his son Calvin to the Calvin & Hobbes comics.

Haha, I had no idea that was the meaning of Calvin. Either way, I think it's a nice and solid name. It sounds nice with James :)

I honestly don't put any thought into the meaning of a name (unless it was something awful). The only people who ever look it up are the ones naming the kid, or the kid. No one else will know or care.

I love it.  And I love Calvin and Hobbes.  When DS walks around the house holding his stuffed tiger, it makes me wish we could have used Calvin as his FN.  (Sounds really, really bad with our LN.)
