Baby clothes question - from a Feb '13 MTB

Clothing question from a first-time MTB - thanks for letting me crash your board!I went back three pages to see how often this is asked, and all I saw was a (very helpful but unrelated) "baby items you love and hate" thread. Forgive me if this has been asked and answered!

So, what styles of baby clothes you really use the most? What did you buy too much of - and what did you buy more of in the first few weeks? I know every baby is different, but I'm hoping to see if there's a trend in any particular item (no one uses infant gowns / everyone uses infant gowns, or everyone loves Carter's / everyone hates Carter's).

Also, how many changes of clothes does your 0-3m baby *really* go through in a day? (Or what is your normal, daily "clothing routine" if you have one?) I ask because my friends who are moms of older children swear they did laundry practically hourly because of 8+ clothing changes a day at first, while my new-mom friends claim 2-3 outfits is all they use most days. I don't know who to believe - the voice of experience or the sleep-deprived mom-in-the-trenches!

Thanks again!  Big Smile

DS was in mostly onesies at home, sleep and plays at day care/sleep, and gowns after he got his hip brace. If he didn't blow out a diaper, I didn't need to change him some days. Other days, he burned through 5 outfits. DS wears mostly Carter's, with some Walmart and Gap stuff mixed in. I hate the Kohls brand (Jumping Beans).

Mostly onesies at home.  Always start the day with onesies and pants, but by the end of the day the pants are off because it's just easier.  We love the sleep sacks for night time (zip up closed bottom ones more than open bottom ones).  He sleeps in a sleep sack every night.  Some days depending on how lazy we are he stays in sleep and plays all day.  Other days he will actually wear an outfit.  We never went through more than two outfits per day, and only occasionally was it two outfits.  The only brand we really don't like would be Gerber...especially the onsesies - they run small and are very thin.

First, I hate HATE hate gowns.  Someone told me they were awesome so I purchased a bunch and all they do is bunch up .  At the very beginning we went through maybe 3-4 changes a day, but now we only change his clothes about once or twice. Obviously more if he has a spit up or exploding diaper. But I have never once changed my LO 8 times a day or even closer.

Now that it is cooler, I like little footed pajama type outfits that are all one piece but that you can unbutton and change his diaper without having to completely take it off of him.  Also, at first, outfits where you can cover their hands (so they can't scratch themselves) are, IMO, a must.  The little mittens did not work for me as LO would take them off.

A big thing to remember is to buy for the season. I did not think about this when buying baby clothes.  Now that it is cooler, I almost never put LO in onesies whereas when I first bought LO home (September) long sleeve with footies would have been too hot.  However, this may be easier said than done because you don't know right now how big they will be.  My LO was IUGR and a little early so he was in newborn clothes for longer than what an average sized baby is.  Also, some of the clothes fit radically different from band to brand.   Alternatively, if you have a big baby or one that grows really fast, they may skip newborn sizes altogether or only stay in them a really short time.  Really, I think the best thing to do is to not go too crazy buying clothes until your LO is here.  Obviously, you want some newborn and 0-3 clothes, but I certainly would hold off on getting much more than that...plus, you will probably receive alot of clothes if you have a shower. People seem to like to give clothes.

We definitely do laundry more often now than we used to but I would say 8+ clothing changes sounds excessive.  I would say that the most outfits we have used in one day is 4.

DD spends a good bit of time in sleepers right now.  She doesn't like to be swaddled so we purchased some sleep sacks to keep her warm at night.  I do like the infant gowns but we haven't been using them since it started getting a little bit chillier.  We have a ton of onesies and a few pairs of pants but like I said, she is usually in a sleeper unless we are going someplace.  Then I might put her in a cute little outfit.  Use bibs!  That definitely helps cut down on outfit changes. I didn't think to do that for the first week or so, even though we have approximately 5,000 bibs.

Also, she isn't quite 2 months old yet and we just had to start putting her in 3-6 month clothing because her arms and legs are getting too long for the 0-3 month clothing.

We love Sleep and Plays, that's mostly what she wears.  DH hate two piece outfits because he finds it more difficult to change her in a two piece outfit and her socks always fall off.  I like to put her in the cute two piece outfits!  Plus people want to see her wear the things they have given us.

We like the infant gowns for nighttime, but mostly she wears a onesie and a swaddle sack.  I like a long sleeve onesie because then her hands don't get cold if she wiggles out of the swaddle.

Most days she only wears one outfit.  And sometimes I'm a bad mom and neither of us get dressed all day if we don't have to.  Now that she's a little bigger we are starting to have more blowout diapers that require a change of clothes, but early on, I didn't have any trouble keeping her in the same outfit all day.

I have found that cute outfits with multiple pieces are too much work and likely get spit up on before we are even out of the bedroom!   Our LO has reflux so just about everything gets spit up on!

We pretty much lived in onesies right after the hospital. You don't want anything tight over the umbilical cord before it falls off so we were leaving the onesies unsnapped at the bottom and keeping him warm with swaddle blankets.  Then we moved into footed one piece outfits that easily snap around the legs so changing all day is easy.  At night we had him in a onesie and either swaddled (first few weeks) then in a onesie in a sleep sack.   Now (he's 11 weeks) we have him in sleep and plays pretty much all day and night since they are footed and warmer since it's a bit colder!

We only put him in 2 piece outfits occasionally when I want him to look "cuter" when we go out.  Having to take pants off to change him is a pain IMO.

I might be odd man out but I'm a gown lover. We cloth diaper and I hate messing around with zippers and snaps in the middle of the night. And the gowns are the only things my son is still able to wear that he was wearing at birth. He will be 3 months on the 1st of December. He has gone from 5 lbs 12 oz to 14 lbs!
I love the warm thick terry cloth type or fleece carter sleep n plays. I have yet to own a carters outfit we don't like. And my new favorite thing to put on Joey are little sweat suits. I tell him he looks like an old fat floridian geezer in his jogging suits.
My least favorites are jeans. With his body type and the extra bulk of the cloth diapers, jeans and cargo pants and any kind of pants that don't have any stretch to them just look odd. Either too big or too tight.
I did a ton of laundry at first. He peed out every outfit I put him in. We still change probably 3x a day on average. I usually change him if we have been out in public just to degerm him. Poop blow outs aren't an issue but he is the great HouPEEni. He is so talented he can pee in his sock and not get his pants wet but more times than not I just strip him down and change him head to toe.
So our normal attire right now in fall midwestern weather is a onesie, gown and socks at night. Onesie, jogging suit and socks during the day. He wears 9mo carter onesies and mostly 69 month clothes.

I totally agree with the poster who said don't buy too much until you know what size your baby is going to be and how warm blooded they will be. I know our next size up I have TOTALLY the wrong stuff. Good thing he loves to shop!

On an average day, we use three outfits (two day outfits, plus pajamas). On a bad day, we use maybe five outfits.

We bought mostly clearance or lightly used clothes and I'm glad we did because these small clothes (newborn and 0-3) do not last very long; and thus the used clothes are in great condition when we bought it.

What we use a lot of:

Footed sleepers (we like the snaps for at night because I don't have to undo the swaddle sacks all the way to get a diaper changed; the zippered ones he wears in the day)

Outfits (onesie, pants, and sometimes a sweater)

Jacket- he has a little jean jacket and a little fleece jacket. Since our house is warm, he usually can wear just a sleeper, and then when we go outside I put him in a jacket and with a blanket. (Rather than him wearing a onesie under a sleeper.)

What doesn't get used a lot:

Outfits that are shirts and pants don't get as much wear because we end up having to put onesies under them or his shirt comes up, exposing his belly.

Sleep gowns- I heard good things but they don't fit well with our swaddle sacks for night time, and his little feet got too cold since he kicks them out.

Socks- most things have feet

I do not know why in the world they make tiny baby pants without snaps. I love his jeans because I don't have to take them all the way off at every diaper change.

For the first month in a half or so we got away with one sleeper that she pretty much lived in for 2 ish days and then we would change her when we gave her a bath.

Now we've gone to a new sleeper at night and an outfit during the day. So two outfits a day. Only twice in almost 4 months have we actually had to put her in more than one outfit because of diaper explosions :). We do laundry for the whole family(DD, H, and I, plus any house items like kitchen towels, sheets, etc.) 3 times a week and only a load maybe two on each day.

She is in a sleeper with feet at night and then during the day it is usually a onesie and some pants. Every once in awhile I get in the mood to dress her cute and I put her in a dress with tights or something like that. I think the carter's stuff is cute but some of the non-popular brands are just as good. I buy a lot from Target.

It all depends on your baby and their bodily functions when it comes to how many outfits. You'll find what works for you. Start with just a couple of each items and see what yall gravitate towards and then buy accordingly. I got lucky and 90% of DDs clothes came as hand me downs from her cousin who is 2 years older.

Types of clothes (in order from most to least favorite):

Favorite (but impossible to find, we only have one!) - a snap up convertible gown/pants. The ease of diaper changing that a gown has, but easy to get on!

Footies - even though they are "pjs", this is what I love to put LO in nearly everyday. I find snaps easy to get on and off, and he sucks at wearing socks so I love having his feet covered since it's winter and cold.

one piece outfits without feet (snap up kind)

2 piece outfits - pants and a snap up shirt

dresses - I hate putting things over his head! These are nice for diaper changes, but the elastic is often too tight

2 piece outfits without a snap up shirt

onesies + pants. I really don't love onesies. I have way too many of them and I hate slipping them over his head.

------------------

We usually go through 3 outfits a day on average.

We went through 2-3 changes of clothes per day and a load of laundry every couple of days. The laundry was mostly because we ran out of bibs or towels often, and we purchased a lot of bibs and towels!

We love the zip up sleepers, way better than the button up, and if you are going to be at home a lot (not venturing out) we also loved throwing a t-shirt and diaper on our LO. He would have so many diaper changes and it was a pain to take off his pants and oneies every single time.

As stated above, get lots and lots of towels and bibs....it will save you from doing laundry every other day.

Hope this helps!

I wouldn't buy too many newborn outfits. My son was 9 lbs 9 ozs when he was born and went straight to 0-3 months. All our newborn outfits were a waste. He's also 2 months now & is outgrowing 3 months and wearing mostly 6 months.

Clothing brands- I love Carter's! Most of the clothes I buy are from there or Children's Place. Gerber clothes run really small so I don't buy them.

He's usually either wearing onesie/pants combo or a sleep n play during the day. Some days we don't have any outfit changes and others we have a few. It just depends. But I usually just do laundry for him once a week.

At night time I prefer the footed pajamas but my dh prefers the gowns because he does all the diaper changes. Honestly I don't mind either.

You really learn your preferences as you go! GL!

My baby boy 7 weeks lives in onsies. They are just the easiest most comfortable for us. I dont find we need more than that bc we keep our house pretty warm.

The only time he wears pants is if we are going out or visitors are coming over. I envy little girls and their dresses. Really why has time to mess with pants when you're changing diapers every 20 minutes!

I like sleep n plays but only the ones with zippers. HATE the ones with snaps. The only downside to the footed ones is he grows out of then faster. I'm debating cutting off the feet of some so he can wear them longer.

Love Carter's stuff it's soft washes well.

I only put him in one outfit a day unless he has a diaper blowout. Two on a bad day. I also put him to sleep in a onsie bc we swaddle him in the Miracle Blanket best purchase to date and he got too warm in PJs AND the swaddle.

Good luck to you!

I really didn't have to buy clothes because we received so much from our shower. Usually I have LO in a onesie or his footie pajamas so he is nice and warm. We usually go through two outfits a day. Good luck!

My day consists of this:

outfit or onesie, possible clothing change, sleep and play for bed with a swaddleme wrap.

I like Carters.

People will get you tons of clothes. dont buy clothes until you know you need more of something.

My go to brand is Carter's. I love the way their stuff fits on DD and its all pretty cute. DD normally wears onesies. I have some leg warmers and some pants to go over them for when we go out. Typically DD goes through about 1 outfit a day. Sometimes more, but that is her usual amount.

As far as clothes that I don't use goes, I hate sleepers. DD sleeps in a fleece halo sleep sack and if I put her in a sleeper, then she gets WAY too hot. Once DD stops being swaddled, I'm sure we will like sleepers more so that way she doesn't get cold at night, but for right now all of my NB and 0-3mo sleepers aren't even being used Sad

Forgot to add that something to think about is how warm you keep your house. Its easy for LOs to get overheated fast. If your keep it around 70 or so and your in pants and a tank top, then LO would probably get hot in a long sleeved sleeper and a swaddle sack. Just something to remember when your are layering your baby.

She is in sleepers 75 percent of the time. I've never had to do an outfit change. If she's in actual clothes I'll put her in ok'd for the night but that's it.

My boy was big to start with and wore a 0-3 sleeper home from the hospital.  We didn't even use the newborn stuff.

I dislike gowns that have an open bottom.  They just ride up under their armpits.

I also dislike sleepers with snaps.  Try lining those up correctly in the middle of the night in the semi-dark.

I don't care for outfits that are two-piece, the shirts just ride up.

The other thing I don't care for is outfits that open from the bottom, forcing you to slide the whole thing over LO's head.  Mine hates that.

LO's go to outfit is a onesie with soft pants and socks.  At night, we usually use a long sleeved sleeper that zips.

DS sleeps in a baby nightgown and socks under a halo sleep sack swaddle. Best access for diaper changes without disturbing him too much as he's warm and comfy. During the day he lives in sleepers with hands and feet. I usually do a load of his stuff daily. Not a big one but his change pad covers are usually pooped or peed on and his outfits meet a similar fate a few times a day. Also burp cloths and pillow covers (if you EBF) will need washing often. I would avoid cute outfits until after 3 months ish unless you have a holiday or event to go to. Baby will just want to be comfy.

At home I keep her in onesies or footed jammies. When we go out or I feel like putting "real" clothes on her, then we change. There are days she can wear the same outfit all day, and others she changes maybe 3 times! I tend to do her laundry at least every 2-3 days because we have so many outfits for her and she doesn't always need a daily change.

Also, DD was only 6 lb 2 oz at birth and all we had was 0-3 mo clothes, so we needed to buy and borrow some NB stuff right away so she had clothes! Oh and with a routine, she gets a bath every night (to help with bedtime) so after that she gets her jammies put on. If I put her in "real" clothes, I tend to do that in the morning after her first change and right before her first bottle.

I totally forgot to say, I've found so far she's been living in her jammies and hats (when we're out). Haven't used many actual outfits yet, though I want to. Pants can be a huge pain in the @$$ I've found, so I try to limit her wearing them to when we go out. I really like the stuff at Carter's and I've found Old Navy's stuff fits her really well.

My DD usually stays in the same outfit all day and night, unless she has a good amount of spit up or a diaper blowout.  We really like the footed one piece outfits with zippers.  The zippers are so much better than the snap ones!  She has some cute outfits with pants, onesies and sweatshirts/sweaters, but we only put those on her for a special outing.  I swear that she immediately spits up on all her cutest outfits.  She did get her outfit changed 4 times one day, but she spits up much less now that she's eating formula.  Most days we don't have to change her outfit at all.

We hated the gowns.  You can't put them in a car seat in a gown and I'm not changing clothes multiple times a day on a sleeping baby.  Love, love, love Carter's clothes.  Gerber does run small and shrinks.  Definitely wait until after your shower to buy a lot of clothes.  She got SO MUCH clothing.  I felt bad that she never wore some of it, and hardly anyone gave me receipts (annoying!).  She's 10 weeks old and is almost out of her 3 month clothing.  She also got a few dresses but I found them so impractical for a newborn and it's so cold here, she really can't wear them.

For home, we definitely stick with sleepers. We'll go through 2-3 a day sometimes depending on how well I got her diaper on her. :) Or spit up, etc. If you can find them with zippers, buy those - so much easier. We also use swaddlemes at night/naptime.

I'd buy sparingly until you see your kiddo - and always err on the bigger size. DD2 was out of newborn sizes at 2 weeks as she was over 9 pounds at birth!

I love footie pajamas, but only the ones that snap down each leg, not the ones that zip down one side.  It's hard to get their leg in the other side without worrying about hurting them.

I HATE shirts.  LO never wears shirts at this point.  It's too hard to hold them when they're wearing them.  Onesies all the way.

Sleep sacks/gowns are nice and easy, but I agree with PP about them bunching up.
