Pregnancy Test Advice...

Ok... SO.... I am 3 days late.

Normally, that would be great... BUT I took a pregnancy test today... BFN..

I have regular period like symptoms for almost a week. Sore breasts, enlarged, cramps etc... but when I was pregnant with my son, I swore up and down I was getting my period because I had all the typical symptoms as well. My test came up positive with him right away.

My question is this... can you be pregnant and receive a negative on a test?  I know it depends on HCG levels but I am am wondering if there are tests that are better than others AND how long it took some ladies to get a positive. I made an appointment for next week to see the OBGYN, The wait just stinks

I used First Response.... Nothing

It's possible that you ovulated later than you think. There is no real way to tell unless you have been charting your temps. I do not think it is necessary to rush to your obgyn unless you have a pre-existing condition that would give you reason for concern.

Wait it out. Test once a week until you get a BFP, AF or reach 60 days. If it makes you feel better buy dollar store HPTs and poas to your hearts contempt.

Early pregnancy symptoms are the same as PMS symptoms, so there's no way to diagnose early pregnancy without that BFP test.

No, there aren't really false negatives on the tests, but there are times when it is too early to test.  Were you using a method to identify ovulation, such as charting your temp or using OPKs?  If you were, then you should be able to get a positive test after 14 days.  On the other hand, if you aren't sure when ovulation occurred, then you can't know exactly when that is.  Some women may get a BFP as early as 9 DPO, but they are a minority.

I'd recommend the newbie thread above, as it has lots of good info.

It's possible.

With my first pregnancy, I received like 5 negative HPT's before I got my BFP. However, I wasn't temping and had no idea where I was with my cycle I just knew my period was late. The only reason I was testing was because I didn't have any AF symptoms and I knew I should've been having them.

Again, it's possible but the only way to know is to keep testing.

If I ovulated later than I thought, could that be a reason for a negative test?

Thank you :)

No, I really don't.  I wouldn't be asking if I did.

I always knew when I was ovulating.  It wasn't until a large cyst ruptured on my ovary a few months ago that things started to go off. So yes, I am asking a question to people who would be a little more informed than me.

Yes, if you ovulated late, then your period would come late even though you are not pregnant.

You had a question also about pregnancy tests and which ones are better... Look at this website which had all that information http://www.peeonastick.com/

Also, try fertilityfriend.com to learn about your cycles.

Yes that would be a reason or as PP stated you may not be pregnant.

Once you have actually confirmed O date (which can only be done by temping and seeing a clear shift) you will be able to know how many DPO you are which will help you decide when to test. Some women get BFPs 10 DPO and others not until 14 DPO.

The newbie link has a lot of helpful information surrounding DPOs and the accuracy it has on HPTs

Here's how baby making works:
Woman has a period. Menstruation.
Some days (or weeks!) later her ovary spits out an egg. Ovulation.
Woman has sex before ovulation.  Intercourse.
Sperm meet the egg.  Fertilization.
7-10 days later, egg hooks up with the uterus.  Implantation.
3-8 days after that, her period is supposed to start, if not pregnant.  Menstruation.
If no menstruation, woman takes a pregnant test.  Positivation. (Yes, I made up a word.)

So if you don't know when ovulation happens:
-You can't guess when implantation happens.
-You can't guess when menstruation is supposed to happen.  You might be 'late', but you might not be.
-You can't guess when the pregnancy test should come up positive.

You can guess.  It's allowed.  You can guess based upon your last cycles.  But it's just a guess.

We can't tell you:
-If you ovulated.
-If the egg was fertilized.
-If the fertilized egg implanted.
-If the test should be positive.

Charting will help you determine some of that.  OPKs will help you determine some of that too.

I bet you a dollar that you didn't.

Let me guess, did you feel "ovulation pain" in your ovaries and that's how? Or are your cycles the same length every.single.month?
