Dental concerns

HI Ladies,

So I am 5 weeks and newly preggers. I had a dental appointment scheduled for Nov 28th to have a crown put in. I was doing a lot of research  on dental work during the first trimester and was not getting any concrete answers. Is it ok? is it not ok? I decided to call the advice nurse and she gave me the go ahead. I still didn't feel settled so I called my dentist. To my surprise the dentist disagreed and refused to do dental work during the first trimester. He said to come in during the second trimester and he would check on the tooth, but if it looked good he wanted to wait until the baby was born. Has anyone else had this experience? Anyone had to postpone their dental work?

I had to have an emergency root canal when I was 6 weeks. This was before I even had an OB. The dentist agreed, only because of the amount of pain I was in. I was allowed general anesthetic, but not regular Novocaine. I was able to have Xrays, but they covered me with 2 of the shield they lay on top of you.

Shortly after, concerned about the amount of Tylenol I was taking for pain I scheduled an appointment with an OB. She ensured me that it was 100% okay to have that dental work done and that Tylenol, as well as Tylenol with codeine even was okay.

However, the dentist himself now wants me to wait until the 2nd trimester to get the crown put on. I think it's for liability reasons for himself, it's best to just wait unless you're in pain. Although my OB keeps telling me it's okay to go in and have the crown done, I'll still wait.

In my booklet from my OB, it says that you should keep up on dental work even while pregnant. I'm not home, so I don't have any more details about what it says, sorry. :/

ETA: I'm pretty sure the most important part was to prevent any kind of infection.

You're welcome. Yes it's much better. Was horrible for awhile. Just be careful chewing, if you pull your temporary off it could get infected and then you'll be in the same boat as me. Good luck!

My dentist told me I could get routine cleanings but everything else had to wait till the 2nd trimester- if something came up.

Regular cleaning should be fine. Beyond that it depends what you need done. I'm thinking that dentist declined because he's covering his butt for liability purposes.

This. It's the same reason a lot of spas won't do massages in the first trimester. They are actually perfectly safe, but they don't want to be blamed if something goes wrong during the first tri.
