Babies mouth open in Sono

I had a ultrasound at 31 weeks and my baby was putting her hand in her mouth, yawning, and sticking her tongue out. The tech said things looked find and the report said there were no growths and her tongue was normal size, but the scheduled me to come back just to make sure things were normal. I have heard that when a babies mouth is open durning ultrasounds it can be a sign of downs.

Has anyone else had an experience like this? This is my first pregnancy and I am not sure what is normal and what isn't.

What?! I've never heard of this. Both of my girls opened their mouths and put their hands in their mouths at the u/s and they are fine.

Babies drink, suck, yawn... I'm sorry your technician freaked you out. It's probably just fine, and totally normal behavior!

Please share where you heard this ridiculous piece of info? My baby had her mouth open quite a few times during her u/s. She does not have Down's Syndrome.

Do you really think that babies keep their mouths closed the entire time they are in utero?

How can a baby suck its thumb if it doesnt open its mouth? Or get hiccups? This makes no sense.

Sorry, I think I might have caused some confusion. Hands in mouth, yawning, and sticking her tongue out was what she was doing the whole time, not why they are asking me to come back. They are asking me to come back to check her mouth..My Dr. said that babies with down syndrome have enlarged tongues and this makes it hard or impossible to close their mouth all the way. So I think they are just being overly cautious??

If you had prenatal screenings early in your pregnancy, like the ultrascreen/quad-screen, it would be unlikely (not impossible) that your baby has undiagnosed Downs.  I would talk to the doc about it more; the more information you have on what they're looking for and what the chances are, the better you will feel.  I know it's making you nervous, but it's also another chance to sneak a peek at your LO!  GL

I never heard of that either.  I bet they are just being way overly cautious.  I wouldn't worry!

I've never heard of this. Some babies are more orally fixated than others. Don't stress yourself out.

Who told you that? Whoever it was, stay away from them for any future advice. They are grossly misinformed.

I've never heard that, a lot of women get adorable shots of what looks like baby sucking it's thumb in utero so I'd be surprised if your LO has Downs and they never saw any other factors.

This. Also they practice breathing and drinking while in utero. They would need their mouths open to do that. My LO was "talking" up a storm at my last U/S. The tech said it was cute and we joked that he was a chatty cathy like his Momma. Nothing mentioned about Downs.

MUD? All normal fetuses will suck their thumbs, swallow fluid, open/close their mouths. No tech will claim there is anything abnormal about such behaviours. Smells like troll.
