Goodwill?

So I have always been a snob and hated Goodwill...especially the odd smell. I have had people mention they have gotten maternity clothes there. I haven't been finding a whole lot in stores and hate spending a ton of money, especially with this being my last baby. Has anyone gotten things at Goodwill? I'm think of giving it a shot.

Have you checked consignment shops.  That would be a step up and they usually have a section dedicated to maternity.  I got pants that were like new for $8 a pair.

Our thrift stores suck here, but my mom found me a couple pairs of maternity pants barely used for $8. I don't see anything wrong with it. They shouldn't smell weird after they are washed (unless they were stored before being donated).

I've bought a ton of maternity from GW.  I wore a shirt to work on Friday from GW, my manager commented that she liked it, she was shocked that it came from GW.  Same thing happened with a sweater dress I wore to my s-sisters wedding on Saturday when my aunt commented.  It's hit or miss, but I love when I get a nice shirt from there for $5.

I am actually going to Portland to visit my mom and get my shopping on. We plan on hitting a few Goodwills while I am there. It is a great place to get used baby stuff for dirt cheap. :)

I got all my stuff from goodwill; well someone was tossing a few bags of their maternity clothes into the bin, and I asked if I could have them instead since we looked to be the same size. Got a ton of clothes for free... all from old navy, gap, h&m and motherhood. You could try ebay too, I bought a lot of clothes from there for dirt cheap.

A lot of my maternity clothes came from thrift stores and consignment shops quite a few were in like new condition and have been brands like motherhood. The few new things I got at Burlington coat factory I have not been happy with. It's so hard for me to spend a lot of money on clothes ill only wear for 5 months.

I haven't tried GW, because frankly, I'm intimidated by the hugeness of the ones around here. However, I did find a kids/maternity consignment shop where I got some really great stuff on the cheap. My first (and favorite) maternity dress was $8, a paid of H&M jeans and some Gap and Old Navy long sleeved t-shirts for $6 - $8 each.

Does GW usually have a maternity section, or do you have to dig through the regular ladies' stuff? (See, I'm so intimidated, I haven't even tried lol)

Saved tons of money by getting lots of mom and baby stuff at Goodwill last pregnancy, and will again. Maternity clothes are one of the best things to buy used as people don't wear them long so they stay in good shape. Also try consignment/secondhand shops that sell baby things.

Thrift shops have a certain smell but you can wash clothes - Wash them twice if it makes you feel better. I have even bought toys and stuffed animals. I have a Shark steamer and use that to clean items if needed. (I know you didn't ask about toys but seriously, you can get things like wooden blocks that cost $30 brand new for like $3 at Goodwill, etc. I got an Uglydoll for $2 at a thrift shop last week.)

If it really skeeves you out, just take a shower when you get home. You can also bring along hand sanitizer. Wear leggings or something under your clothes if you don't want to try on stuff before you wash it. Well worth the savings!

I went with a friend to a couple thrift stores in a more affluent area.  My hope was that there would be more selection and maybe higher end brands that were gently used.  It worked out for me, I ended up getting a ton of stuff.

Last pregnancy I got Old Navy maternity jeans at a Goodwill. I lost my job when I was about 12 weeks pregnant, so I really had to cut costs where I could. Check to see if you have a Clothes Mentor ( It's like a Plato's Closet for grown women) and they always have Maternity clothes.

I love GW and consignment shops! I haven't had time to go myself since getting pregnant, but my Mom has found SO much awesome stuff for me AND baby in amazing condition for super, super cheap.

Definitely check it out.

I actually have a shirt on from GW today.  Our GW's around here get new things from Target (Liz Lange) for whatever reason that they can't sell in the stores.  I've picked up quite  a few items, black dress pants, etc that are brand new from there and only a few dollars a piece.  I can't justify paying $40 for a shirt, just to be able to wear it for a couple months.  I love GW maternity!

I grew up wearing Goodwill clothes so I don't mind them. But I think Savers is a step up and they are just a bit more expensive than Goodwill. Or try any other store that the person gets paid to bring in their clothes. Those types of stores generally have better quality clothes as the store only accepts slightly worn items.

most GW's and SA's have their own maternity section.

I went to the salvation army and the things were really over priced IMO for what usually is very worn clothes. I know that it goes to charity, but it is hard to want to buy a shirt for $5 when I just bought a brand new one from Target on sale for $5. You have to look hard for sales but they are there. I bought 3 tanks from Old Navy this week for $2 each NO JOKE! I just wear them with cardigans. You can do cheap and new if you look around.

I think it really depends on the store. The GW near us is in a LCOL area, and the clothes ... well, they're not so great. Really out of date and worn out. I've been to GWs in higher income areas and found much nicer things.

I did find some maternity clothes at goodwill a couple of weeks ago. It was a grand opening though, and was very busy, but I had a friend, that went through all the racks for me, and found several maternity items, and several with tags on them. I also did buy some stuff at a consignment shop.

I have read on these blogs that some women have found good deals, at burlington coat factory, and ross dress for less. I want to go to both those stores sometime, but they are a decent drive.

Unfortunately there is no maternity section at goodwill. My friend went through many of the racks for me and found stuff. Just make sure you have lots of energy and time when you go, and bring a friend to help!

Really?  All of the stores around us have a maternity rack (it's normally maternity on one side and plus size clothes on the other).  There's never been a huge selection, but there are nice things to be found.

Im certainly not a goodwill snob, however, with all this recent talk of swamp crotch I am reluctant to take pants from anyone I don't know. Some people are dirty. I dont think washing them would cure what these posts have put in my head. :/ Shirts yes. Swamp crotch pants no thanks.

I love thrift/goodwill/consignment stores. We mainly shop there when pregnant or not. If not there then I'm all over Ross and the like. I see no need to spend a boatload of money when if you look hard enough you can find some gently used things for cheaper.

I was so proud of my son when he was like 9, he bought himself a Spongebob Monopoly game for about half the price as at a regular store(we must have gotten it at Ross or Big Lots or something, because it was new-new). You couldn't shut him up about how he saved a bunch of money and now he had money to buy other stuff.

I went to four thrift stores and only found one with a maternity section and that was pretty sparse (3-4 items). I am getting a bag of clothes from one of the ladies I went to high school with who has a bunch she can't wear. That's probably the best option.

Burlington Coat Factory has some decently priced maternity stuff though, like $10 for a top or sweater. It's right around where the baby cribs and stuff is.
