Saved tons of money by getting lots of mom and baby stuff at Goodwill last pregnancy, and will again. Maternity clothes are one of the best things to buy used as people don't wear them long so they stay in good shape. Also try consignment/secondhand shops that sell baby things.
Thrift shops have a certain smell but you can wash clothes - Wash them twice if it makes you feel better. I have even bought toys and stuffed animals. I have a Shark steamer and use that to clean items if needed. (I know you didn't ask about toys but seriously, you can get things like wooden blocks that cost $30 brand new for like $3 at Goodwill, etc. I got an Uglydoll for $2 at a thrift shop last week.)
If it really skeeves you out, just take a shower when you get home. You can also bring along hand sanitizer. Wear leggings or something under your clothes if you don't want to try on stuff before you wash it. Well worth the savings!
