Sleeping Positions

So, I know I'm supposed to be sleeping on my left side, but lately I've found that I'm ONLY comfortable when I'm on my back. Everything I've read says sleeping on your back is a really bad thing to do, but I can't sleep otherwise. On the very rare occasion that I'm able to fall asleep on my side, I wake up on my back anyway. Does anyone have any experiences or suggestions?

I sleep which ever way except my stomach. With DD they told me in the 3rd tri that I had to sleep on the left, but I found it difficult. If it bothers you to sleep on your back, get a body pillow or a regular pillow prop it under your right side to support your back. You can't sleep on your arm all the time.

Sleeping on your back is bad if it feels bad to your body.  If it's comfortable, you're fine.  If you become short of breath or your arms or legs get tingly, move.  Usually your body will wake you up to prompt you to move if it's not liking the way you're laying.

At 13 weeks, you're fine to sleep on your back. Everything I've read said you should really focus on sleeping on your side after 20 week or so.

You're probably fine on your back at this point. And pp is right, I think your body will mostly tell you when you shouldn't be on your back.

I use a pregnancy pillow, though any pillow will work, to help prop myself and keep to my side. They really are amazing!

Who said you cannot sleep on your back?  I always had a body pillow and cuddled up with it all the time so sleeping on my left side was fine but some nights I would use pillows so I could sleep on my back.  I change all the time.  No one position works for me.

Yes.  And even after 20 weeks, my doc said that my body will tell me when I can't sleep on my back anymore.  Of course I make the effort to sleep on my sides, but sometimes, like you said, I can only get comfy on my back.  My doc said the major warning signs are dizziness and shortness of breath.

I just asked my midwife about this because, even though I have a snoogle, I keep waking up on my back.  She said as long as I'm propped up so my heart is higher than the rest of my body its ok.  I'm still nervous about sleeping on back, so I have my snoogle on my left side and I stuff a pillow under my right, so if I do roll over onto my back, the pillow prevents me from laying flat.  I've actually slept pretty nicely this way.

I still sleep on my back because its comfortable for me.  I was told the ideal sleep position is your left side, and that my body will know when sleeping on my back is no longer ok.  For now, sleep how you are comfortable.

Lurking...I just now started to not be able to sleep on my back. The first time it happened I woke up short of breath and could obviously tell it would be a no no from here on out. So now I rotate from side to side and when my hips hurt too much by 4am, I prop pillows up to sleep elevated or I go out to the recliner.

I slept completely on my stomach until 20 weeks with twins. I think you'll live on your back. My doc said your body will naturally let you know when it's time to move around.

I specifically asked my doctor about this because I was really liking sleeping on my back, too. My doctor told me that once I hit 20 weeks, I needed to be sleeping on my sides, primarily my left side. Up until that point, I didn't worry about it too much. However, it just gets more and more uncomfortable to sleep on your side, and sooner or later you're going to have to get used to it... so in a way you might as well start now.

I have REALLY bad hip pain now that I'm further along... I wake up constantly and have to flip over to help with that. I've found that propping myself up on pillows helps, so that I'm not directly on my side, but leaning more towards my back or my stomach.... but still not lying flat on my back.

I always end up on my back even if I try sleeping on my left side. I've heard so many mixed things about how to sleep I'm not sure what to believe honestly. I think just doing what feels best is probably the most important thing.

Im 13 weeks today and still sleeping on my stomach with a pillow stuffed under me. Its the only way I can get to sleep. I try to sleep on my sides but it hurts my shoulders so bad.

I am most comfortable on my back, but I'll start out on my left. The right side sleeping can lead to varicose veins (puts stress on a major vein system apparently). My doctor said that any position is fine as you'll shift a lot during sleep. If I wake up on my back, I'll move back to my side.
