When you read this name on paper...

How would you say it in your head?

Noel (for a female, see siggy)

I am spelling it Noel rather than Noelle, because she's going to be a Christmas baby and uhh, because I love the way it sounds.

If you were to read this name on a paper, -Elizabeth Noel- would you say it "NO-ELL" or "NOHL"?

I'm hoping most people would see the feminine first name and say "NO-ELL" instead of the masculine "NOHL".  Thoughts?

If I knew it was a girl I would assume No-ell, like in the song "The First Noel".  My dad was born in December and his MN is Noel, pronounced like Nohl and I also know someone with the FN Noel (male).  Even with those two RL associations with male Noels, I still in my head associate it more like No-ell like in the song.

If I saw it as a FN I would say Nohl and assume boy. As a MN with Elizabeth I would assume they want it pronounced as Noelle.

My initial response was that if I read it on paper, I would assume it's a boy's name - but as a MN after Elizabeth, I would pronounce it No-ell, and not think much of it.

Noelle has the same Christmas meaning, though, and is pronounced the way you want to pronounce Noel, so I'm a little confused by your reasoning there.

This exactly!

If you want no-EL... It is Noël or Noelle

I would read it Nohl and then find myself puzzled after seeing it next to a girl's name. I would discern then that it was intended to be pronounced No-ell but would assume that the parents misspelled it.

I knew a girl named Noel and pronounced it No-ELLE so I did read it as no-ELLE but I bet there will be people who pronounce it as Nohl.  However, since it's in the mn spot I don't think it's that big a deal.

Noel = nohl, male spelling

Noelle = no-elle, female spelling

Noel is a masculine word in the french language - le noel = Christmas.   Femininzing it in French gives you Noelle.

I wouldn't give your daughter the masculine spelling.

I would read it as No ell, the girl version. Pronouncing it Nohl never even crossed my mind. I have never heard of any boy named Noel or even the name as a boys name.

With Elizabeth I would probably get that you were going for "No-Ell," but I would still look at it and think that it is the masculine name. Without knowing that your LO was born around Christmas, I would wonder why she had a masculine middle name.

If it were me, I would go with Noelle instead.

Yep, you're right.  But, have you ever seen an ornament, sign or  heard a Christmas song with Noel spelled Noelle?  I haven't.

I'd like society-at-large to make the Christmas connection when reading her name, and I like the spelling I chose much better than Noelle.

Thanks for your input!

My best friend growing up was a girl named Noel.  She was called "Nohl" all the time, and hated that her mom hadn't given her either of the feminine versions.

That makes more sense, although to be honest I'm not sure I'd immediately think, "oh, Christmas!" with either spelling, even though I know what the name means. I don't really have a problem with the Noel spelling, though, especially in the MN spot. And I think the FN-MN combo is beautiful!
