IVF 1: Fail. Devasted

Hi ladies. I've been lurking here since I started my first IVF cycle in Oct. My first beta was a whopping 7 yesterday. I had another one this morning and it went down. I am so very heartbroken.

DH and I are unexplained. We've had four failed IUIs as well. We've been TTC since '09.

I'm meeting with my RE on Tuesday. I know everyone's situation is different, but what questions did you ask? I'm sure I'll be an emotional wreck so I just wanted to write some down.

TTC #1 since 2008. IUI #1: Clomid+trigger=BFN. IUIs #2-4: Femara+Follistim+trigger=BFNs.
IVF #1, Nov 2012: Bravelle+Menopur. 17R, 12M (all ICSIed), 6F. 5 day transfer of 2 embies=BFN. 2 embies frozen.
FET #1: started BCPs April 2013.

I'm so sorry :(  I failed my first IVF in September so I know how you're feeling.  I didn't go in with a ton of specific questions for my appointment except - WTF happened?  I guess the questions I may have asked, or at least things that came up, were:

Based on the cycle, did he think my eggs/embryos were good enough quality to try again or did he think we should move to donor eggs.  I'm 41 so there is definitely a worry of my eggs just being too old.

What he thought we should do differently, if anything, next time.

If you didn't have an endometrial biopsy prior to your first IVF, you may want to ask about that.  It's a pretty painful procedure but there is a bunch of research suggesting that it may help with implantation. (You may want to google "endometrial biopsy and IVF" to get more information.)

If you weren't on them before, I would ask about taking DHEA and/or CoQ10 to assist with egg quality.

 That's all I can think of right now.  Take care of yourself!!  ((((hugs))))

I'm so sorry. My first cycle failed too, and I was really upset. I took a few months off before trying again, which I think was the right decision for me. Good luck as you decide on next steps.
Me: 39. DH: 41. TTC since 2009.
FSH: 9.5 at highest. AMH (11/2011): 0.9. AFC: 10ish. HSG: Normal. SA: Normal.
July 2011 - Feb. 2012: 2 Clomid/TI cycles; 3 injectables/IUI cycles. Good response but BFNs.
Dec. 2011: Laparoscopy (clear) + hysteroscopy to remove uterine polyp.

April 2012: IVF #1: FSH 9.2, AFC 7-8. Antagonist protocol.
Started stims (300iu Gonal-F, 150iu Menopur) 3/28.
Added ganirelix 4/1. Trigger 4/5 (7 follies). ER 4/7: 7R, 0M, 0F. :-(

Nov. 2012: IVF #2: Long Lupron protocol.
Started Lupron 10/27. AFC 10+. Started stims (300iu Follistim, 150iu Menopur) 11/8.
Trigger 11/18 (7 follies). ER 11/20: 9R, 1M, 1F. 3dt of my one 6-cell embie on 11/23: BFN.

Dec. 2012: Hail Mary IUI cycle with leftover IVF meds: BFN.

Feb. 2013: IVF #3: Estrogen priming protocol.
Pre-AF: estro patch + ganirelix. AFC 8-10. Started stims (450 Follistim, 150 Menopur) 1/28.
Added ganirelix 2/4. Combined Lupron/HCG trigger 2/10 (6-ish follies).
ET 2/12: 6R, 1M, 1F w/rescue ICSI. My embie didn't make it. :-(

July 2013: DE IVF #1

I'm there with you. My first beta was 7 last Thursday and my second beta on Saturday was 2. I can't make an appointment to meet with my RE until CD 1. We have 2 frozen embryos, so I hope to move on to a FET next.

I'm so very sorry. It's so devastating with IVF fails, especially after you've already been through so much.

I'm also unexplained, so I went into my appt with all sorts of questions about what they thought my dx could be (immune problems, egg issues, etc), but they didn't really have any answers for me. I think it will be interesting to hear your RE's take on your entire cycle, and what they might do differently next time. They may or may not have a reason why your cycle failed, which is the hard part. Hopefully you'll come closer to getting some answers!

HSG: Right tube all clear, left tube inconclusive
3 failed Clomid Cylces
4/5 lap revealed blocked left tube, but right tube is open
April/May- 50 mg Clomid + Ovidrel + IUI #1= CANCELLED left ovary ovulating
June 1- 100 mg Clomid + Ovidrel + IUI #1 = BFN

I have no advice because I'm in the exact same position. 5 failed IUIs and we found out yesterday officially that our first IVF cycle failed. Of course I didn't need the blood test to tell me that since I got my period before I left for the appointment. My beta was a 5.

 I'm devastated too. We're going to move on to FET but that ET is at least 48 days away which feels like an eternity.  My husband is taking it in stride but I'm beside myself with grief and feel like I can't move and like everything we've done has been a huge waste of time and money. 

I know. Totally not helpful. But you're not alone in the boat. I hope your meeting with the RE goes well..ours is Dec 6 and I'm hoping I can pull myself together before then.

I'm so sorry. 

After we failed our cycle, it took me awhile to set up my WTF appointment because I was was so sad I was angry. I overanalyzed everything over those few weeks and thought I would have a million questions, but I didn't.  My RE answered any questions I had, before I had a chance to ask them.  All I really wanted to know is what we would do differently this next cycle to try to get me on the right side of the odds.

I'm so so sorry. We just met with our RE Monday after my c/p. She has decided to change the entire protocol.

My questions were, how long can we try again and will you be changing the protocol and how will it hopefully give us a better outcome next time.

I'm so sorry. My first cycle failed in June. We took a few months to regroup. Best thing we could have done. Take care of yourselves and I hope you get some answers at your WTF appt.
Me 37 MH 40 - TTC since June 2010 - dx with Severe MFI. Straight to IVF with ICSI. IVF #1 - ER 06/13/12 - 9 Eggs Retrieved - 4 ICSI'd - only 2 fert. 06/15/12 - 2DT - 3 cell & 6 cell with fragmentation. Beta 06/29/12 - IVF #1 = BFN. 07/20/12 - WTF Appt -Told by our RE to quit IVF. Second Opinion from RE is good. IVF#2 - November 2012. Estradiol Pills Started 11/6. Stims start 11/16. ER 11/26 - 7 eggs retrieved - all mature. 4 fertilized with ICSI. ET 11/29 Transferred 3 embryos. Beta is 12/10. 1st Beta 81 2nd Beta 160 and 3rd beta 360!!! First U/S 12/21/12 - We saw one beautiful gest. sac. 2nd U/S is 01/04/2013 - H/B 183 02/05/13 - NT Scan - everything looks good and IT'S A BOY!!! EDD 08/19/12

I am so sorry that you are going through this.  I would just ask the dr what they think happened and what you can do to improve things for the next try.

Ultrasound 1/10 - Nothing completely empty uterus Beta 1/14 - 743; Beta 1/17 - 1704 ultrasound shows nothing. Officially a miscarriage. 1/21 Beta 3900 Dr. says it ectopic. Ultrasound shows a miracle heartbeat right in the uterus where it belongs! Dr. says I can be cautiously optomistic!!! Hang in there baby!
