s/o wedding dresses - after the wedding

What did you do with your dress? Mine is just hanging in the closet, still dirty. I don't want to pay a lot of money to get it cleaned (I heard once that it would be like $300), only to have it sit in the closet forever for no reason. I don't expect DD to wear it, I don't plan on wearing it myself again. I would like to donate it to a shop in my city that loans out gowns to lower income girls for prom, etc. But I doubt they would take it dirty. So I'd have to pay $$ just to donate it.

I finally got my cleaned for $60! I thought they were going to charge me 300 too, but I shopped around. Also, I didn't get it 'preserved'. I have heard if you do that, you really need to do it every 5 to 10 years and I wasn't about to do that. Mine is in my closet at my parents house. One day I want a Hope Chest and I will keep it in there. It was fun for us to see my moms dress when my sister and I were planning our weddings, so I'll likely do the same. Maybe make a christening outfit out of it!

Yep, this is me. It got super dirty packing stuff into the car at the end of the night and I just put it back into the garment bag and left it there.

Still hanging (dirty) in the closet and it's been that way for 5 years.  I really need to at least get it cleaned.  I plan to give it to DD when she is an adult if she wants it, although I don't expect her to wear it.

Upon leaving the hotel the next day I asked one of the hotel cleaning ladies for a bag to put it in. So, it's still stuffed in that black garbage bag in a rubbermaid tote in my closet. Indifferent

I donated mine to Making Memories Breast Cancer Foundation. Mine wasn't super dirty, but they do ask for a cash donation of (I believe) $40 and that includes any necessary cleaning. http://motherswithcancer.wordpress.com/2011/10/27/featured-charity-making-memories-breast-cancer-foundation-by-judy/

I threw it in the trash the next day. When my aunt found out, she dug it out from the trash and she has it...ETA: My wedding was across the sea, so I wasn't going to take it back with me anyway.

You can wash it in your washing machine! My SIL told me to try it so I did and my dress came out clean and undamaged. I'd google it first to see suggestions based on what material your dress it. If you aren't going to wear it again, you've got nothing to lose!

My mom had it cleaned and boxed. It was like $20 to have it done at the place I bought it.

Mine is still dirty hanging in its bag in the guest room closet. About once a year (for the last 4) I think about taking it to get it cleaned but it never happens! I debate on getting it preserved but I don't know why I would.

This is a great idea! Thanks for posting. Mine is still just hanging (unwashed) in the spare room closet. I still love it but I have no plans for it so I can't seem to bring myself to clean/preserve it for no reason.

At least I'm not alone in having a dirty dress hanging up!  Fortunately mine is at my parents' house, we don't have that much space so I'm grateful they've held on to it for me.  That also means in the year we've been married, I've really only thought once or twice about what my long term plans are for it.  I'm pretty undecided.

I only got married three months ago, but mine is in a ball in the garment bag in my home office. My parents just brought it to me from Ohio and it fell of the hanger in transit. I need to get it out today and hang it up.

Mine is FILTHY at the bottom! I think I will have it cleaned. I can't decide what to do with it, on one hand it would be great to sell it and recoup some of the cost, but on the other it would be nice to save it and see if my daughter (hopefully!) someday wants to use part of it to wrap her bouquet or something.

Mine is at my grandma's house still, I think.  Or it's at my mom's house (10 years later).  There was a kitchen fire a couple of months after my wedding, and my dress was still just in a pile in my old bedroom there.  In the whole insurance process, it got cleaned and preserved.  I don't think I would have gotten it preserved on my own.  I am bummed that they put my shoes and my veil in with the dress - I would have liked to keep those out, but don't want them enough to bust them out.

One of these days I'll figure out what to do with it.  Since it's in CO and I live in FL.  I like the idea of using it for baptism/first communion for any daughters.  Or donating it.  Who knows?

Yeah mine's been hanging in my closet (totally dirty) since my wedding, which was last August. Call around to different cleaners because the $300 quote might be for preservation instead of just cleaning. I asked around and one place will just clean my dress for $75 and then I plan on donating it to a Brides Against Breast Cancer charity.

I did a trash the dress photo shoot. I then had it cleaned for just 90 and I think I'll hold on to it just in case I have a dd so she can see it. All I wanted to so when I was 11 was try on my moms dress, so I will keep it.

I had mine cleaned for 90. It's strapless, so it's in a box under our bed. If we have daughters, I want then to be able to try it on while they're growing up. My Mom still had hers, too, so it would be cool for them to see how styles change. And I have heard of people getting the dress out every year for a photo as the daughter grows up, which I think would be awesome.

Mine is hanging, dirty, in a dress bag in my guest closet. It is taking up much needed space. I don't know what to do with it. I'm saving it in case I come up with some wonderful idea at some point.

My mom offered to pay to have it preserved, so I did.  If she hadn't paid for it (it's pricey) it would probably still be hanging in my closet.  I would love for a future daughter or daughter in law to wear it, but I definitely don't expect it.
