Thoughts please

We're expecting a girl in January and I have loved the name Harper for a while... I heard it about 3 years ago on a little girl and fell in love with it. I know it is becoming very popular.

I do not know any Harpers Personally, But that doesn't mean there won't be 4 Harpers in DD class 5 years down the road...

So what do you think? Too popular to use? Do you know any harpers IRL? What do you think of the name aside from popularity?

I really like the name Harper, and I don't personally know any IRL.

DH veoted b/c of the association with Stephen Harper (Prime Minister) but I think of Harper Lee and To Kill a Mockingbird.

I really don't care for Harper.  I don't think it's a pretty sounding name at all.  It's less that it's getting popular and more that it's got a big fat trendy stamp on it for me.

2011 54
2010 118
2009 172
2008 296
2007 439
2006 508
2005 745
2004 887

It didn't rank above 1000 (possibly at all, I don't know how to check) before 2004 on the SSA database and now it's skyrocketed to 54.  That's a bigger jump than Isabella made and the hated Nevaeh.  Just sayin'.

For me, it would be too popular as I know two Harper's that were born within the last two years. In all honesty, I don't care for the name. There's nothing really wrong with it; it's just NMS. If you love it, go for it.

I think Harper sounds trendy and I dislike the potential of Harp or Harpy as a nn...

Its all the prime minister here in canada so I would assume your conservative and dislike it even more because of that.

I like the name! I don't know any Harpers personally but imagine it will be fairly common, although not top 10 or anything. I'd use it!

I totally feel you on this one.  I have *loved* Harper for about 6 years. Waaaaaay before it became remotely popular.  I still really really love it and think it is one of the few girl names that might actually go with DD's name, as much as anything can. But I have the same worries as you.

I know exactly 2 girls named Harper. One is about 7, the other is in the pre-school class above DD, so probably 3ish.

If you love it, use it.

Nothing is more discouraging than unappreciated sarcasm.

It's too trendy for my taste. I know one Harper, and she was born within the last year.

I agree.  It's not that it's popular, it's that it's unbelievably time-stamped and trendy.

I think it will be one of those names that will be popular for a year or two and  20 years from now everyone will know how old you are if you have the name harper.

I too love Harper, but would never use it now because of the crazy popularity. What about Piper? Yes, it's trendy too but not nearly as much as Harper.

I also like the name and, a year ago, it was at the top of my name list. I don't know any IRL and that is very appealing to me. Every other name I like enough to use belongs to at least one other person I know (or to their recently-born child). But I don't know any Harpers and I like that. I agree with the other PPs though. That is a huge jump in popularity. I don't think I would want to chance using it for fear that my LO would be one of many at school, in her circle of friends, and in her workplace later on in life.

Five years ago I fell in love with Harper. When pregnant with my daughter, I had two friends name their daughters Harper. So we nixed it.

If popularity doesn't bother you, use it!

Well, I do think Harper is pretty trendy now.  But I also like it as a name. I don't know any Harpers of any age.

I vote for use it if you love it.

This is why I don't like it. It wouldn't bother me if it were a timeless name that was popular (ie William), but in 20-30 years I think it will be super dated to the 2010s.

Like those 80s names that are just sooo 80s.

This. I would love to use the name, but I know 2 people with daughters named Harper (one born in July, one in October), so I imagine there will be quite a few Harper Lastinitials come elementary school.

Well, Harper is the head of the Conservative Party.  He is also the PM that was elected to a majority government with just under 40% of the popular vote (we have 5 parties represented in the House of Commons currently, so things can get complicated here regarding vote percentages and seats) after being found in contempt of parliament for the first time in the history of the Commonwealth.  He and his party aren't very popular with moderate & left wing Canadians, or even a lot of small-c conservatives, which is probably where that comment came from.

As another Canadian, I couldn't do it.  It's trendy and all I can think of is the photo of him holding a kitten.  I would PIP, but I keep failing at it.  It should suffice to say it is not the image I would want associated with my daughter.

Just saw this post and just wanted to tell you that I am due in March and we are naming our little girl Harper. We didn't come up with it because of popularity or because we heard it as another child's name. I am a Washington Nationals baseball fan and my favorite player is Bryce Harper. At the moment I heard it my SO and I turned toward each other and said Harper, that will be her name. Our families hated the name but that didn't put a doubt in our minds to change it. Her middle name will be Eily (pronounced I-Lee) which is her grandmother's name and is Gaelic for Eileen or Ellen. When we told everyone the name together, Harper Eily, everyone then fell in love with it and said it sounded perfect. So don't care what anyone else thinks or if it is too popular or not. I feel like every name is popular in it's own way. It is like when you buy a car, a day later you see 40 of them on the road. I never thought in my life I would name my child Harper, I liked other names actually. But at that moment when you are pregnant I feel like you know what name your heart settles on. So Congrats on baby Harper! I think it is a beautiful name.
