Hot bath?

Hi Ladies,

Maybe this a dumb question but a friend of mine just told me that you're not supposed to take hot baths during pregnancy? I am 5 weeks and this is my third child. I took baths every night almost with both my kids and I have been quite frequently so far with this pregnancy as well. It's kind of a nightly ritual for me.

I know you're not supposed to do hot tubs/sauna etc, but I never thought of a hot bath. I have googled and there seems to be a lot of conflicting info, some saying not over 100 degrees. I'm pretty sure my bath water is hotter than 100 degrees, but I've never checked.

It seems like it wouldn't be a big deal as baths cool quickly, and I didn't have problems with my boys but obviously I don't want to do anything to endanger the baby. I will ask the doctor when I go, but don't have an appt for a couple weeks.

What do you ladies think? Again, sorry if this is a dumb question, or if it has been asked before.

Thanks!

A normal hot bath is definitely not 100 degrees. I just checked with science-nerd DH to be certain, but he says water doesn't even boil until 212 deg F. Take your hot bath and enjoy worry free.

Ha thanks! I am definitely not sitting in boiling water so it must be far from 100 degrees. I'm in Canada so not always accurate when it comes to Fahrenheit!

Ha. Mine are well over 100 degrees. My son takes baths over 100 degrees. Average bath water temp is 101-106. OP- http://www.americanpregnancy.org/pregnancyhealth/hottubs.htm

And you really had to check what temp water boils at? Seriously? And WTF does that have to do with the question?

I don't stress about hot baths.  One, the water doesn't maintain the temperature, like you said.  Plus, your entire body isn't submerged.  If you're turning red and sweating, it's too hot but keep a glass of ice water with you and don't boil yourself alive and you're fine.

This.

To me, a bath isn't comfortable unless it's (well) over 100 degrees. That's why I've given them up.

But, since water doesn't boil until 212 degrees, I guess you're safe then, eh?

Ok now I totally agree. Because I'm used to Celsius, I thought maybe I was crazy and my baths weren't 100 degrees. But then I had my bath last night and actually took the temp and it was 41 degrees, so that's almost 106, right? 100 degrees would be freezing to me!

Anyway, the further my little experiment, I took my temp while in the tub and it didn't get past 99 degrees, so I'm assuming its ok.

Thanks for the responses and the link to APA. Looks like its fine as long as you use common sense about it, like most things. :
