hair dye!

I am so confused over the hair dyeing debate while in our 1st trimester. I read some older posts on here.  I DESPERATELY need to have my roots done and really don't know what to do. What are all of you doing?

I don't dye my hair but depending on the color you are going for (reds to blacks, natural) you can henna your hair instead which is completely safe throughout pregnancy

Do your hair. FYI for people who decide to go the henna route: if you usually get professional color, be prepared for the possibility of your stylist refusing to color your hair again any time in the somewhat near future. Professional color may react badly with henna, so many stylists [like myself] won't color over it in most situations.
The combination of dyes is likely to alter the desired color and/or damage the hair.

My doc says regular color is completely fine.

I heard that if you dye your hair while pregnant, your baby will be born with a tail.

The choice is yours.

A tail would be pretty cool though.

I'm also desperately in need of a color retouch, however my doctor asked me to wait until the second trimester.  I have heard all of the pros and cons, and I'm going to follow my doctor's suggestion and wait a few more weeks.

I got my hair colored last week and dyed my hair regularly throughout my first pregnancy. Everything was fine. If I didn't dye, I would look like a skunk.

I did. I used the no ammonia colors from Whole Foods and kept the color off my scalp. Minimize the contact with the scalp and it will be fine.

I just dyed my brunette hair at the hairdresser. Had to cover those grays and there is no definitive evidence to not do it.

I think the whole, "no hair dye" rule is really dated. Hair dyes today do not contain the same chemicals they did decades ago. I plan to continue to dye my hair. Just make sure the room is well ventilated.

I've been TTC for almost 3 years and so asked my hair stylist at the time if there was something less toxic (thinking I'd get pregnant right away!). She suggested a stain instead of a dye. Something about it not penetrating the hair follicle or something. It works just as well for me (to cover gray) and I've been using it ever since. Now that I'm pregnant, I'll probably try to go a bit longer than normal between appointments, but still plan on getting my roots touched up with the stain.

Coloring your hair is completely safe during pregnancy, technology has evolved so much and I also believe that the rule of "not coloring during pregnancy" is extremely outdated. Do not use henna! It is so hard to remove from hair and will more likely turn orange when trying to remove it. If you are more comfortable, ask for an off the scalp application hilites.
