pregnancy hives?

Just wondering if anyone else is experiencing this. I'm unable to sleep b/c I'm so itchy. I happen to be allergic to shellfish, so I've had hives before. However, this is like 10x worse than anything I've ever experienced. I would like to know if it's safe to take a Benadryl. I need some sleep and I've scratched myself raw. :(

Yes I do and they're horrible. I get them with every pregnancy and when I'm in the sun for a while. My dr gave me a prescription but I can't remember what it is. I would tell your dr and see what they reccomend. It is very annoying I know. I hope you get some sleep!

I had PUPPP my last pregnancy, but that doesn't show up til a bit later on (third trimester) and it was AWFUL! I scratched my feet raw from being so itchy! I'm praying it doesn't show up again this time!

Thanks everyone. I finally managed to fall asleep at around 6 am (I kinda think I was just super exhausted). I will definitely ask about the cream and I'm getting Benadryl soon as possible.

theres an anti itch spray by benedryl that i use in the summer when i get bug bites. i've been itchy on a few occasions and just spray it where it itches. does the trick.

Please elaborate on these pregnancy hives?!  I noticed my legs broke out in itchy red bumps the last time I shaved - which isn't normal for me - and I just assumed it was the razor, shave cream, or moisturizer (even though its an all-natural body butter and shouldn't/doesnt usually cause that kind of reaction).

I begged DH to rub my legs all night just to alleviate the itching!  I couldn't get any relief :(

Based on this thread, I'm now guessing its perhaps a combination of whatever I used to shave with and/or the act of shaving itself, combined with pregnancy hormones.  Sound about right?

I would ask your doctor, but I had really bad poison ivy when I was first pregnant and my doctor gave me the ok to take regular benadryl.  I was also prescribed some higher concentration hydrocortosone.  It sounds like you're sure it's just hives, but I don't think it would hurt to get it checked out.  I had ringworm once and I was using some hydrocortisone cream on it and it was making it a million times worse (I didn't know it was a fungal infection at the time).  The hydrocortisone will turn off your immune response and will make it worse.  Good luck :)

I'm in my 16th week and have had hives 3 consecutive days out of nowhere.  I have really bad allergies but had to stop the shots early on in the pregnancy because I had some brown spotting issues.  I called the allergist again but can't get in for 2 more weeks.  My friend who is an ob/gyn said that it's probably pregnancy related and that benedryl and hydrocortisone cream is safe.  If I try to relax, they seem to go away...but I didn't go to the gym yesterday because I noticed some hives at work and didn't want to agitate them.  If it persists, I'm going to call my ob/gyn next week to see if I can start taking my daily loratadine (generic claritin) to help.
